Engine Removal





^ Tools Required
- J 41427 Universal Lift Bracket, Or Equivalent

CAUTION:
^ Failure to flush out the oil cooling System or the engine cooling system may result in premature failure of the replacement engine.
^ If the engine is damaged internally and a new engine is installed, make sure that all foreign material is completely flushed out of the cooling system.
^ The oil cooler system should also be flushed out (if equipped).

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Drain the cooling system.
3. Remove the engine cover.
4. Remove the engine coolant reservoir.
5. Remove the air cleaner assembly and duct.
6. Remove the grill assembly.
7. Remove the radiator support assembly.
8. The radiator support assembly will include
^ Two ground straps
^ Headlight assemblies
^ Radiator
^ A/C condenser (if equipped). Evacuate the A/C system. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
9. Remove the front bumper. Refer to Body and Frame.
10. Remove the engine cooling fan. Refer to Engine Cooling Fan Replacement in Cooling and Radiator.
11. Remove the heater hoses at the engine.
12. Remove the engine wiring harness and connectors.
13. Remove the accelerator and cruise control cables (if equipped). Refer to Powertrain Management.
14. Remove the A/C compressor and bracket (if used). Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
15. Remove the generator and bracket. Refer to Powertrain Management.
16. Remove the intake manifold.
17. Remove the fuel lines and the bracket at the rear of the engine.
18. Remove the transmission oil level indicator tube.
19. Remove the transmission shift cable connector. Raise the vehicle. Drain the crankcase.
20. Remove the exhaust pipes from the manifolds. Refer to Exhaust System.
21. Remove the starter. Refer to Starting and Charging.
22. Remove the starter opening shield.
23. Remove the torque converter from the flywheel.
24. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission.
25. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
26. Lower the vehicle.
27. Install the universal lift bracket using the following procedure.
a. Disconnect the spark plug wires. Refer to Powertrain Management.
b. Remove the distributor cap. Refer to Powertrain Management.
c. Remove the two right rear lower intake manifold bolts.
d. Install the universal lift bracket marked RIGHT REAR.
e. Install the retaining bolts.
^ Tighten the retaining bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
f. Remove the air conditioning compressor and the accessory drive bracket. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
g. Disconnect the EGR tube from the intake manifold.
h. Remove the two left front lower intake manifold bolts.
i. Install the universal lift bracket marked LEFT FRONT with the arrow pointing to the front of the engine.
j. Install the retaining bolts
^ Tighten the retaining bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
28. Remove the engine mounting through bolts.
29. Remove the mounts from the engine and the frame.
30. Remove the engine from the vehicle.
