Compressor Replacement (L21/LP4)
Removal Procedure
1. Remove the air cleaner outlet front duct. Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
2. Discharge and recover the refrigerant from the system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
3. Loosen the compressor front generator mounting bracket and brace bolt.
4. Loosen the compressor rear generator mounting bracket and brace bolt.
5. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor pulley.
6. Remove the electrical connector from the compressor, as necessary.
Important: When removing the sealing washers, prevent dirt and foreign material from getting on the following sealing surfaces:
* The washers (6) and (7)
* The hose fitting (5)
Use a lint-free cloth in order to clean all of the sealing surfaces.
7. Remove the compressor hose fittings, clamp, washer and the bolt.
8. Remove the compressor sealing washers.
Remove the refrigerant hoses from the compressor.
9. Remove the rear generator mounting bracket, bolt, washer and nut.
10. Remove the following components from the front generator mounting bracket and brace:
1. The bolts (5)
2. The washers (2)
3. The nut (8)
4. The adjusting retainer
11. Remove the compressor from the front bracket and brace and the rear generator mounting brackets and bolts.
12. Remove the A/C compressor.
Installation Procedure
1. Fill the compressor. If the compressor is being replaced, refer to Refrigerant Oil Distribution Specifications [1][2]Refrigerant Oil.
2. Position the compressor onto the front generator mounting bracket and brace and the rear generator mounting bracket.
3. Install the following components:
1. The bracket bolts (5)
2. The washers (2)
3. The nut (8)
4. The adjusting retainer
Do not tighten the above components.
4. Install the washer, nut and the bolt on the rear generator mounting bracket. Do not tighten the washer, nut and the bolt.
Important: When installing the sealing washers, prevent dirt and foreign material from getting onto the sealed surfaces of the following components:
* The washers
* The hose fittings
Clean all of the sealing surfaces with a lint-free cloth.
Do not oil the sealing washers prior to assembly.
Do not reuse the sealing washers.
5. Install the NEW sealing washers onto the pilots of the fittings. Ensure that the washers bottom against the surface of the hose fittings.
6. Install the refrigerant hoses on the compressor. Secure the refrigerant hose fitting (5) with the clamp, washer (3) and the bolt (2).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
Important: Ensure that there is a 1.2 mm (0.047 in) space between the hose fittings and the compressor rear head.
7. Hold the clamp in place. Install the washer and hand tighten the compressor hose fitting bolt.
Tighten the compressor hose fittings bolt to 35 Nm (26 lb ft).
8. Install the electrical connector to the compressor, as necessary.
9. Adjust the drive belt.
* Tighten the compressor front generator mounting bracket and brace bolt to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).
* Tighten the compressor rear generator mounting bracket and brace bolt to 45 Nm (33 lb ft).
10. Install the drive belt to the A/C compressor pulley.
11. Install the air cleaner outlet front duct. Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement Air Cleaner Outlet Front Duct Replacement in Engine Controls.
12. Add refrigerant to the system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging.
13. Inspect the system for leaks. Refer to Leak Testing Leak Testing.
