Steering Gear Replacement (TRW Ross)
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Power Steering Gear Mounting Bolts Caution in Cautions and Notices.
Notice: Do not hammer on the pitman arm, pitman arm shaft, or puller. Damage to the pitman arm or steering gear may result.
1. Position the front wheels and the steering wheel in the straight ahead position.
2. Remove the pitman arm (7). Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement (Saginaw Steering Gear) Pitman Arm Replacement (Saginaw Steering Gear)Pitman Arm Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear) Pitman Arm Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear)Pitman Arm Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear with FH4) Pitman Arm Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear with FH4) in Steering Linkage (Non-Rack and Pinion).
3. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the steering gear.
4. Cap the hoses and the ports in order to prevent dirt from entering the system.
5. Tag the hose locations.
6. Remove the cardan joint pinch bolt.
7. Remove the cardan joint from the steering gear stub shaft (2).
8. Slide up the intermediate shaft until the joint clears the steering gear stub shaft (2).
9. Remove the steering gear mounting nuts (4) and the washers (3).
10. Remove the steering gear mounting bolts (10) and the washers (3).
11. Remove the steering gear (1).
Installation Procedure
1. Install the steering gear (1) to the frame rail.
2. Install the new steering gear mounting bolts (10) and the new washers (3).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
3. Install the new washers (3) and the new nuts (4).
Tighten the steering gear mounting bolt to 450 Nm (330 lb ft).
4. Install the pitman arm (7). Refer to Pitman Arm Replacement (Saginaw Steering Gear) Pitman Arm Replacement (Saginaw Steering Gear)Pitman Arm Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear) Pitman Arm Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear)Pitman Arm Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear with FH4) Pitman Arm Replacement (TRW Ross Steering Gear with FH4) in Steering Linkage (Non rack and Pinion).
5. Connect the power steering hoses.
6. Install the cardan joint on the stub shaft (2).
7. Install the cardan joint pinch bolt.
Tighten the cardan joint pinch bolt to 62 Nm (45 lb ft).
8. Fill the power steering fluid.
