Transfer Case - NVG 261-NP2 (Two Speed Manual)

New Venture Gear 261 Manual Shift Two Speed Transfer Case
The NVG 261 transfer case is a manual transfer case with three drive ranges. The three drive ranges are 2HI, 4HI, and 4LO. The 2HI position is for normal driving with the rear wheels pushing the vehicle. The 4HI position is for driving in low-traction road surfaces only. The front axle is pulling the vehicle, and the rear axle is pushing the vehicle. The 4LO range is used for off road driving, heavy snow, deep mud, or shallow fording. The 4LO is similar to the 4HI except that the gearing in the transfer case is set for low speed and high torque. When shifting between 2HI and 4HI the transfer case may be shifted while the vehicle is moving. However, when shifting from 2HI or 4HI to 4LO or from 4LO to 2HI or 4HI, stop vehicle and place transmission into neutral. Move the 4WD control lever with one continuous motion. To avoid gear clash, do not pause when shifting.
When the ignition switch is placed in the run position and the 4WD control lever is in the 4WD position, the transfer case switch closes, supplying a ground to the 4WD relay coil supply voltage circuit. With the ground applied, the logic of the front axle actuator actuates a DC motor to engage the front axle and supply voltage to the Four Wheel Drive (4WD) engaged signal circuit. The 4WD engaged signal circuit notifies the PCM and the Anti-Lock Brake System that the vehicle is in the 4WD mode. The 4WD indicator is commanded on via a Class 2 serial data signal from the PCM. When the 4WD control lever is in the 4WD Low range position, the transfer case switch closes and supplies a ground on the 4WD low signal circuit. This informs the PCM that the vehicle transfer case is in Low range. When the vehicle is in Low range, the PCM changes the shift pattern of the automatic transmission.
