Drum Brake System: Adjustments

Drum Brake Adjustment

^ Tools Required
- J28662 Brake Pedal Effort Gauge
- J21177-A Drum-to-Brake Shoe Clearance Gauge





1. Depress the brake pedal 3 times with 30 kg (66 lbs.) of force using the J28662.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Rotate each rear tire and wheel assembly in order to inspect the brake shoe drag on the brake drum.
4. If the brake shoe drag on the brake drum is not correct, remove the tire and wheel assembly.
5. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
6. Insert the J21177-A to the braking surface of the drum.
7. Position the J21177-A over the linings on the brake shoes.
8. Turn the adjuster (2) until the primary and the secondary shoes contact the J21177-A.
9. Install the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement.
10. Depress the brake pedal 3 times with 30 kg (66 lbs.) of force using the J28662.
11. Rotate the brake drum in order to inspect the brake shoe drag on the brake drum. Verify the brake shoe drag on the brake drum is correct.
12. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
13. Lower the vehicle.
