DTC P2080 Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor 1 Performance

Circuit Description

The exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor 1 is installed to the diesel particulate filter (DPF) housing. The EGT sensor 1 is a variable resistor and it measures the temperature of the exhaust gas in front of oxidation catalyst. If the ECM detects an excessively low or high exhaust temperature this DTC will set.

Condition for Running the DTC Low Temperature Diagnosis:

^ DTCs P0079 P0080 P0112 P0113 P0116 P0117 P0118 P0182 P0183 P0237 P0238 P0545 P0546 P0602 P0643 P0652 P0653 P2228 P2229 P2454 and P2455 are not set.
AND the following conditions are met for longer than 5 minutes.
^ The battery voltage is between 10 to 16 volts.
^ The ignition switch is ON.
^ The engine speed is more than 1600 RPM and does not vary more than 50 RPM.
^ The fuel injector quantity is more than 30 mm3.
^ The boost pressure does not vary more than 1.5 psi (10 kPa).
^ The engine coolant temperature is between 149 to 198°F (65 to 92°C)
^ The fuel temperature is less than 198°F (92°C).
^ The intake airflow valve position is more than 50%.
^ The turbocharger control is under normal operation.
^ The exhaust brake valve is commanded OFF.
^ The DPF regeneration is not running.

High Temperature Diagnosis:

^ DTCs P0079 P0080 P0112 P0113 P0116 P0117 P0118 P0182 P0183 P0237 P0238 P0545 P0546 P0602 P0643 P0652 P0653 P2228 P2229 P2454 and P2455 are not set.

Condition for Setting the DTC

^ The ECM detects that the exhaust gas temperature 1 (in front of oxidation catalyst) is not within a predetermined range of the calculated value for 1 second. This indicates an excessively low or high temperature.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

^ The ECM illuminates the MIL when the diagnostic runs and fails. Refer to DTC Type Definitions for Action Taken When the DTC Sets - Type A.
^ The ECM inhibits EGR control.
^ The ECM inhibits DPF regeneration control.

Condition for Clearing the DTC

^ Refer to DTC Type Definitions for Condition for Clearing the MIL/DTC - Type A.

Diagnostic Aids

^ Use the Temperature vs. Resistance table to test the EGT sensor 1 at various temperature levels to evaluate the possibility of a skewed sensor. A skewed sensor could result in poor driveability concerns.
^ Fuel system problem (e.g. fuel injector damage) may set this DTC.
