Circuit/System Verification

Verify customer complaint by verifying that the iPod(R) is in good working condition and adjust the speaker outputs through the radio controls, fade and/or balance.

Diagnostic Aids

The iPod(R) interface connector was not originally designed for an automotive application and is susceptible to vibration and movement damage. It is recommended that excessive movement of the iPod(R) and cable be avoided while driving.

Circuit/System Testing

Important: Verify the iPod(R) is in good working order and visually inspect the iPod(R) connector cavity for any signs of damage before performing this diagnostic. Verify the proper software has been downloaded

1. Radio ON, set the radio to the iPod(R) interface menu option and attempt to operate audio from the iPod(R).
2. Gently wiggle the interface harness at the iPod(R) connection. Verify the iPod(R) interfaces with the radio when the connector is wiggled.

If the iPod(R) interfaces with the radio intermittently when the connector is wiggled, inspect the iPod(R) connector cavity and interface cable for damage. Replace the suspect iPod(R) interface cable or inform the customer that the iPod(R) may be damaged.

3. Ignition ON, Observe the PAL red LED indicator. Verify the red LED indicator is illuminated.

If the PAL red LED is not illuminated, go to iPod Audio Distorted or Inoperative - One or More Speakers (iPod Audio Distorted or Inoperative - One or More Speakers) .

4. Ignition OFF, disconnect the PAL and test the CAN 2 serial data circuit for an open/high resistance.
5. If all circuits test normal, replace the PAL.

Repair Instructions

* For PAL replacement, refer to Ipod(R) interface installation instructions.
* Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification (Verification Tests) after completing the diagnostic procedure.
