DTC P0711, P0712, or P0713

Diagnostic Instructions

* Perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.
* Review Strategy Based Diagnosis for an overview of the diagnostic approach.
* Diagnostic Procedure Instructions provides an overview of each diagnostic category.

DTC Descriptor
DTC P0711
- Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor Performance

DTC P0712
- Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor Circuit Low Voltage

DTC P0713
- Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) Sensor Circuit High Voltage

Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor is located inside of the transmission control module (TCM). The TCM is located within the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly and is not serviced separately. The TFT sensor provides transmission fluid temperature to the TCM. This fault is handled inside the TCM and no external circuits are involved.

Conditions for Running the DTC

The engine speed is greater than 450 RPM.

DTC P0711
* No DTCs P0711, P0722, or P0723.
* DTC P0711 not passed this key ON.
* The TCM temperature sensor is between -39 and +149°C (-38 and +300°F).

DTC P0712

DTC P0712 is not failed this ignition cycle.

DTC P0713
* The transmission output shaft speed is greater than 200 RPM for greater than 200 seconds.
* DTC P0713 is not failed this ignition cycle.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

DTC P0711 - Fail Case 1
* Vehicle speed is greater than 8 km/h (5 mph) for 300 seconds cumulative.
* The TFT is between -40 and +21°C (-40 and +70°F).
* The TFT has changes by less than 2.0°C (3.6°F) in 100 seconds.
* The engine coolant temperature (ECT) is greater than 70°C (158°F).
* The ECT has increased by 55°C (99°F) since startup.

DTC P0711 - Fail Case 2
* Vehicle speed is greater than 8 km/h (5 mph) for 300 seconds cumulative.
* The TFT is between 120-150°C (248-302°F).
* The TFT has changed by less than 2.0°C (3.6°F) in 100 seconds.
* The ECT is greater than 70°C (158°F).
* The ECT has increased by 55°C (99°F) since startup.

DTC P0711 - Fail Case 3

The TCM power up temperature changes by greater than or equal to 20°C (36°F) 14 times over 7 seconds.

DTC P0711 - Fail Case 4
* Vehicle speed is greater than 8 km/h (5 mph) for 300 seconds cumulative.
* The TFT is below 20°C (68°F).
* The TFT has changed by less than 2.0°C (3.6°F) in 100 seconds.
* The ECT is greater than 70°C (158°F).
* The ECT has increased by 55°C (99°F) since startup.

DTC P0712
* The engine is running.
* The TFT is greater than or equal to 170°C (345°F) for greater than 10 seconds.

DTC P0713
* The engine is running.
* VSS is great than 200 RPM for greater than 200 seconds.
* The TFT is less than or equal to -39°C (-39°F) for greater than 10 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

* DTC P0711 is a Type B DTC.
* DTCs P0712 and P0713 are Type A DTCs.
* The TCM freezes transmission adaptive functions.
* The TCM allows the vehicle to operate in transmission protection mode.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

* DTC P0711 is a Type B DTC.
* DTCs P0712 and P0713 are Type A DTCs.

Diagnostic Aids

The driver information center (DIC), if equipped, will display 'TRANSMISSION HOT - Idle Engine' when the TFT reaches 132°C (270°F). The TFT parameter on the scan tool should rise steadily to a normal operating temperature, and then stabilize. Ask about the customer's driving habits, trailer towing, etc. Trailer towing should occur in D or M range. Ensure the engine cooling system is functioning normally.

Circuit/System Verification

Start the engine and operate the vehicle at 64 km/h (40 mph) while observing the TCM power up temperature sensor and the TFT sensor.

The system is operating normally if the TCM power up temperature is within 10°C (18°F) of the TFT temperature.

Circuit/System Testing

Clear the DTC and operate the vehicle under the conditions for running and setting the DTC. Verify that the DTC does not reset.

If the DTC resets, replace the control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly.

Component Testing

Perform the Control Solenoid Valve and Transmission Control Module Assembly Inspection (Control Solenoid Valve and TCM Assembly Solenoid Performance Test) .

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.

Control solenoid (w/body and TCM) valve assembly replacement. Refer to Control Module References for replacement, setup, and programming.
