DTC P0500 Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Circuit

Circuit Description

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) 2 is used by the ECM and speedometer which generates a speed signal from the transmission output shaft rotational speed. The sensor has the following circuits.

^ Ignition voltage feed circuit
^ Low reference circuit
^ VSS 2 signal circuit

The VSS 2 uses a hall effect element. It interacts with the magnetic field created by the rotating magnet and outputs square wave pulse signal. The ECM calculates the vehicle speed by the VSS 2.

If the ECM detects the VSS 1 signal input from the transmission control module (TCM) is higher than the VSS 2 signal inputted to the ECM this DTC will set. (Automatic transmission)

If the ECM detects the VSS 2 signals are not generated this DTC will set. (Manual transmission)

Condition for Running the DTC

Automatic Transmission:

^ DTCs P0700 U0073 and UO1O1 are not set.
^ The ignition switch is ON.

Manual Transmission:

^ The ignition switch is ON.
^ The engine speed is more than 1100 RPM.
^ The engine coolant temperature is more than 68°F (20°C).
^ The fuel injection quantity is more than a threshold.

Condition for Setting the DTC

Automatic Transmission:

^ The ECM detects that the VSS 1 signal from the TCM is more than 15 MPH (25 km/h) over the VSS 2 signal for longer than 10 seconds.

Manual Transmission:

^ The ECM detects that the VSS 2 signals are not generated for longer than 10 seconds.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

^ The ECM illuminates the MIL on the second consecutive driving cycle when the diagnostic runs and fails. Refer to DTC Type Definitions for Action Taken When the DTC Sets - Type B.
^ The ECM inhibits EGR control.
^ The ECM inhibits DPF regeneration control.

Condition for Clearing the DTC

^ Refer to DTC Type Definitions for Condition for Clearing the MIL/DTC - Type B.

Diagnostic Aids

^ If an intermittent condition is suspected refer to Intermittent Conditions in this section.
^ Electromagnetic interference in the VSS 2 circuits may set this DTC.
