Circuit/System Description
The camshaft position (CMP) actuator solenoid is controlled by the engine control module (ECM). The ECM sends a 12V pulse width modulated (PWM) signal to the CMP actuator solenoid. The CMP actuator solenoid positions the CMP actuator spool valve to control the amount of pressurized engine oil, which enters into the CMP actuator assembly. A low reference wire circuit between the CMP actuator solenoid and the ECM completes the electrical circuit. The frequency of the pulse width modulated signal is fixed at 150 Hz. The ECM can only command the CMP actuator to advance the valve timing from the camshaft park position, or retard the valve timing back to the Park position. The total range of valve timing command is 23 degrees as measured at the camshaft, or 46 degrees as measured at the crankshaft.
Conditions for Running the DTC
* The ignition switch is in the Crank or Run position.
* The system voltage is between 11-18V.
* The CMP actuator is commanded ON.
* DTC P0010 runs continuously when the above conditions are met.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
The ECM detects that the state of the high side driver and the state of the CMP solenoid control circuit does not match. The ECM will detect an open, high resistance, short to ground, or a short to voltage on the CMP solenoid control circuit, or an open on the low reference circuit, if the condition is present for more than 6.25 seconds.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
* DTC P0010 is a Type B DTC.
* The CMP actuator is commanded to the park position.
Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTC P0010 is a Type B DTC.
Diagnostic Aids
This test procedure requires that the vehicle battery has passed a load test and is completely charged. Refer to Battery Inspection/Test (Battery Inspection/Test).

Circuit/System Verification
1. Ignition OFF, open the hood to disable the Auto-Stop function. Refer to Hybrid Modes of Operation Description (Hybrid Modes of Operation Description).
2. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool hood position parameter displays Open.
• If the hood position does not display Open, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle (Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions) for DTC P254F.
3. Ignition ON, engine running, increase engine speed to between 1,200-1,500 RPM. Monitor the camshaft actuator solenoid with a scan tool while observing the following control circuit status parameters:
* The CMP actuator solenoid ckt short to gnd test status
* The CMP actuator solenoid ckt open test status
* The CMP actuator solenoid ckt short to volts test status
• Each parameter should display OK.
4. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.
Circuit/System Testing
Note: You must perform the Circuit/System Verification first.
1. Ignition OFF, open the hood to disable the Auto-Stop function. Refer to Hybrid Modes of Operation Description (Hybrid Modes of Operation Description).
2. Ignition ON, verify the scan tool hood position parameter displays Open.
• If the hood position does not display Open, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle (Diagnostic Trouble Code Descriptions) for DTC P254F.
3. Ignition OFF, disconnect the CMP actuator solenoid harness connector, X112.
4. Test for less than 3 ohmbetween the low reference circuit terminal E and ground on the ECM side of the harness.
• If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
5. Verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the low reference circuit terminal E and the control circuit terminal D on the ECM side of the harness.
• If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
6. Remove the test lamp.
7. Command the CMP actuator from 0-20 degrees. Verify the scan tool CMP actuator ckt short to volts test status parameter is OK.
• If not the specified value, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
8. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the control circuit terminal D and the low reference circuit terminal E on the ECM side of the harness. Command the CMP actuator to 20 degrees with a scan tool. Verify the scan tool CMP actuator ckt short to volts test status parameter is displaying Fault.
• If not the specified value, test the control circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM.
9. Remove the water pump from the engine. Refer to Water Pump Removal (Overhaul).
10. Inspect and test the remaining CMP solenoid wire harness from X112 to the CMP solenoid for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
• If all circuits test normal, replace the CMP actuator solenoid.
Component Testing
Note: You must perform the Circuit/System Testing before proceeding with Component Testing.
Static Test
Test for 5.9 and 7.7 ohmat 20°C (68°F) between the solenoid control terminal 2 and the low reference terminal 1 at the CMP actuator solenoid.
If the resistance is not within the specified range, replace the CMP actuator solenoid.
Dynamic Test
Note: Do not allow electrical current to flow through the CMP actuator solenoid for more than 1-2 seconds, or damage to the solenoid may occur.
Point the CMP actuator solenoid vertically, towards a shop towel. Connect one end of a fused jumper wire to the CMP actuator solenoid control circuit terminal 2 and 12V. Connect a second jumper wire to the low reference circuit terminal 1 and momentarily connect to ground. The CMP actuator solenoid should immediately extend.
If the CMP actuator solenoid pintle does not extend, replace the CMP actuator solenoid.
Repair Instructions
