Engine Speed Sensor: Description and Operation

Six and eight cylinder engines use two pickup coils. The start pickup coil, located on the distributor, signals the computer to fire the spark plugs at a fixed amount of advance during cranking only. The amount of advance is determined by the position of the start pickup coil. The run pickup coil functions the same as for the four cylinder engines except that its signal is not recognized by the computer during engine cranking.
