Visual Inspection
In order that the ignition and fuel systems function properly, all electrical, vacuum or air hose connection must be tight.
Terminals in electrical connections must lock together. Look for connectors that are not fully plugged into each other or terminals that are not fully plugged into the insulator.
All hoses must be fully and firmly fitted at their connections. Look for hoses that are not fully plugged in or are pinched and cut.
The following must be checked before proceeding with the diagnostic procedure.
1. IGNITION SYSTEM CONNECTIONS
A. Connectors at computer.
B. Pickup coil connector at distributor.
C. Spark plug wires.
D. Coil wire (cap and coil connections).
E. Connectors at coil.
F. Starter relay.
2. FUEL CONTROL SYSTEM
A. Connector at vacuum delay switch.
B. Connector at coolant switch.
C. Connector at oil pressure switch.
D. Connector at choke.
E. Connectors at carburetor harness.
F. Carburetor ground.
G. Carburetor ground switch.
H. Engine harness to main harness connector.
I. Battery cables.
J. Battery ground on engine.
K. Engine to firewall ground strap.
L. Oxygen sensor connector.
M. Electrical connector at throttle kicker solenoid.
3. PCV SYSTEM
A. Hose between intake manifold and PCV valve.
B. For the 1.7L engine, check hose between valve cover and air cleaner.
C. For the 2.2L engine, check hose between breather module and air cleaner.
D. PCV valve plugged in.
E. Correct PCV valve. Should be black in color.
4. COMPUTER
A. Hose between vacuum transducer and carburetor.
B. Hose at vacuum delay switch.
C. Air intake hose.
5. EGR SYSTEM
A. Hose between carburetor and CVSCC/CCEGR valve.
B. Hose between CVSCC/CCEGR valve and EGR valve.
6. AIR SWITCHING SYSTEM
A. Hose between carburetor and CVSCO/CCEVS valve.
B. Hose between CVSCO/CCEVS valve and air switching/relief valve.
C. Hose between air pump and air switching/relief valve.
D. Hose between air switching/relief valve and exhaust manifold.
E. Hose between air switching/relief valve and plumbing to catalyst.
7. EVAPORATIVE CONTROL SYSTEM
A. Hose between carburetor and external bowl vent valve.
B. Hose between external bowl vent valve and canister.
C. Hose between external bowl vent valve and air switching/relief valve.
D. Hose between canister and carburetor.
E. Hose between canister and fuel tank line.
8. CHOKE SYSTEM
A. Hose between carburetor and plastic connector.
B. Hoses between the 3-way connector and choke pull off diaphragm and the heater air door sensor.
9. HEATED AIR DOOR SYSTEM
A. Hose between air sensor and delay valve.
B. Hose between delay valve and door diaphragm.
C. Hose between air cleaner and exhaust manifold heat stove.
10. POWER BRAKES AND/OR SPEED CONTROL
A. Hose between manifold and power brake booster.
B. Hose between power brake booster and speed control servo or intake manifold and speed control servo.
11. HEATER/AC SYSTEM
A. Vacuum hose at water valve.
B. Vacuum supply hose to instrument panel control.
C. Vacuum hose from carburetor to throttle kicker solenoid.
D. Vacuum hose from throttle kicker solenoid to throttle kicker.
