Engine: Service and Repair


1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Drain cooling system, crankcase, transaxle and clutch release system, and remove engine under cover.
3. Mark position of hood hinges, then remove hood.
4. Release residual fuel pressure as follows:
a. Remove high floor side panel from luggage compartment.
b. Start engine and disconnect electrical connector from fuel tank sending unit (fuel pump connector).
c. When engine stops from lack of fuel, turn off ignition. Failure to release pressure prior to disconnecting fuel lines may cause fire or personal injury.
5. Remove air cleaner and heat protector, then disconnect oxygen sensor electrical connector and remove intercooler inlet and outlet hoses, if equipped.
6. Disconnect brake booster hose and heater hoses.
7. Remove accessory drive belts. On models with A/C and/or power steering, remove compressor and power steering pump mounting bolts, then secure assemblies aside, leaving hoses connected.
8. Disconnect exhaust pipe from catalytic converter.
9. Disconnect and plug oil cooler and transaxle cooler lines, if equipped, disconnect radiator hoses, then remove radiator assembly.
10. Disconnect accelerator, cruise control and kickdown cables, as equipped.
11. Disconnect and plug fuel lines and clutch slave cylinder hose.
12. Disconnect coil high tension lead and speedometer cable.
13. Mark and disconnect necessary electrical connectors and vacuum hoses from both engine and transmission, then secure harnesses aside to prevent damage.
14. Remove shift knob and spool release lever, console cover, inner and rear console boxes, console side covers and the front console box, then remove shifter assembly.
15. Raise and support vehicle, mark installation position of propeller shaft companion flange, then remove propeller shaft.
16. Remove front engine mount nuts and loosen but do not remove rear mount nuts and bracket bolts.
17. Lower vehicle and attach suitable lifting equipment to engine.
18. Support transmission with suitable jack, then remove rear engine mount and bracket assembly.
19. Remove engine and transmission assembly from vehicle.
20. Reverse procedure to install. Torque rear mount bracket bolts to 7.2 ft. lbs., rear mount nuts to 14-17 ft. lbs., front mount nuts to 9-14 ft. lbs., and propeller shaft companion flange bolts to 36-43 ft. lbs.
