8-148 IGNITION SYSTEM - Service Adjustment Procedures
SERVICE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURES


IGNITION TIMING

IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT FOR 1.5L ENGINE Adjustment conditions:
Coolant temperature: 85 - 95~C (185 - 205~ F)
Lamps and all accessories: Off
Transaxle: N (Neutral)
Steering wheel: Straight forward position (Vehicles with power steering)
Set Parking Brake
1. Connect tachometer and timing light.
2. Start engine and run at curb idle speed.

Trans. Curb idle speed rpm

First 500 km M/T 650 -100 / +150
(300 mile)
A/T 700 -100 / +150

After 500 km M/T 700 +/- 100
(300 mile) A/T 750 +/- 100

M/T: Manual transaxle A/T: Automatic transaxle



3. When checking the basic ignition timing at high altitude [altitude of 1200 m (3900 ft.) or more], disconnect the vacuum hose (yellow stripe) from the sub-vacuum chamber of the distributor and plug the hose end.




4. Check basic ignition timing and adjust if necessary.
Basic ignition timing: 5~ +/- 2~ BTDC

5. To adjust ignition timing, loosen distributor mounting nut and turn distributor housing.
6. After adjustment, securely tighten mounting nut.
7. When checking ignition timing at high altitude, connect the vacuum hose disconnected in Step 3 to the original position before making sure that the ignition timing has been advanced to the actual ignition timing.
Actual ignition timing: 10~ BTDC

IGNITION TIMING ADJUSTMENT FOR 1.6L ENGINE

Adjustment conditions:
Coolant temperature: 85 - 95~C (185 - 205~F)
Lamps and all accessories: Off
Transaxle: N (Neutral) Set Parking Brake

1. Connect tachometer and timing light.
2. Start engine and run at curb idle speed.
Curb idle speed: 700 +/- 100 rpm



3. When checking the basic ignition timing at high altitude [altitude of 1200 m (3900 ft.) or more], stop the engine and disconnect the water-proof female connector from the ignition timing connector. Connect a lead wire with an alligator clip to the ignition timing adjusting terminal to ground it.




4. Check basic ignition timing and adjust if necessary.
Basic ignition timing: 10~ +/- 2~ BTDC
5. To adjust ignition timing, loosen distributor mounting nut and turn distributor housing.
6. After adjustment, securely tighten mounting nut.
7. When checking ignition timing at high altitude, stop the engine and return the ignition timing adjusting terminal grounded in Step 3 to the original condition. Then, restart the engine to make sure that the ignition timing has been advanced to the actual ignition timing.
Actual ignition timing: 15~ BTDC
