Service Procedure

Figure 1:




1. Disconnect battery.

2. Disconnect the flexible hose from the air intake tube for access to the spark plugs (Figure 1).
3. Disconnect plug cables and remove the spark plugs.

4. Remove the oil dipstick.

5. Raise vehicle on hoist.

6. Remove the skid pan located below the engine compartment.

7. Remove the stabilizer bar.

8. Remove plug and drain engine oil. Reinstall drain plug and tighten to 30 ft.lbs. (40 N-m).

9. Disconnect oil return hose from the nipple on the right side of the oil pan.

10. Remove the oil pan bolts and remove the pan.

11. Remove the oil pickup tube/screen.

12. Rotate the crank shaft so that the # 1 and # 4 connecting rods are at the bottom of their stroke.

Note: Check the rod caps for reference marks before removing the caps to ensure proper reinstallation.
13. Remove the nuts from the # 1 and # 4 connecting rod caps and remove the caps. Replace the bearings with supplied new bearings.

Important:

^ Use protectors (such as lengths of hose material) to cover the connecting rod bolts to avoid crankshaft damage from bolt thread contact.

^ Be sure to coat the new bearings with engine oil prior to installation.

14. Reinstall the connecting rod caps and nuts and torque to 34 ft.lbs. (46 N-m). Make sure that the cap reference marks are in the original position for reinstallation.

15. Rotate the crankshaft so that the # 2 and # 3 connecting rods are at the bottom of their stroke and proceed to replace the bearings on those rods in the same manner.

16. Recheck the torque on all connecting rod capnuts -- 34 ft.lbs.(46 N-m).

17. Scrape the oil pan and cylinder block mating surfaces to remove old gasket material.

18. Reinstall the oil pickup tube/screen, replacing the tube O-ring with the new, supplied ring (Figure 2). Coat the O-ring with engine oil before installation.

19. Apply silicone sealer (Mopar P/N 4318025) at the 4 seam locations as shown (arrows) in Figure 3.
20. Thoroughly clean oil pan to remove any existing material debris.

21. Reinstall the oil pan, using the new, supplied gasket. Torque oil pan bolts 60 inch.lbs. (7 N-m).
22. Replace oil filter -- adding the cost of the new filter to your claim.

23. Reinstall oil return hose on the oil pan nipple.

24. Reinstall stabilizer bar. Torque the fasteners to 8 ft.lbs. (11 N-m).

25. Reinstall engine compartment skid pan, and torque the attachments to 27 ft.lbs. (37 N-m).

26. Lower vehicle.

27. Reinstall spark plugs and air duct hose.

28. Reconnect battery.

29. Reinstall dipstick and add engine oil to the proper fill level. Add the cost of the oil to your claim.

Completion Reporting and Reimbursement

Claims for vehicles which have been serviced must be submitted by DIAL dealers on the DIAL System. Non DIAL dealers may submit WROs. Claims submitted will be used by Chrysler to record recall service completions and provide dealer payments.

Enter only one VIN per claim on a WRO. Fill in the labor operation number and time allowance and write on the WRO "Customer Satisfaction Notification # 455 -- Engine Connecting Rod Bearings." Do not enter other service claims on the same WRO.

Use the following labor operation number and time allowance:
