SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Click/snap/clunk from the rear axle when engine torque is applied during acceleration or when shifting from forward to reverse.

DIAGNOSIS
Road test the car with several deep throttle accelerations from a standing start. If there is a snap/click/clunk noise coming from the rear axle area, it may be caused by excessive clearance between the rear axle inner bearing and the bearing spacer. See Figure 1.

NOTE: THIS PACKAGE IS FOR ONE REAR WHEEL ONLY. IF THE NOISE IS COMING FROM BOTH REAR WHEEL BEARINGS, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO ORDER TWO SPACER PACKAGES.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
This repair consists of the installation of a 2 mm shorter spacer along with two Teflon coated washers. These new washers must be installed between the new spacer and the inner (differential side) rear wheel bearing.
The correct procedure used to change the spacer is listed on Page 3-20 of the 1988 Conquest Engine, Chassis & Body Service Manual and on Page 3-12 of the 1989 Conquest Engine, Chassis & Body Service Manual. Orientation of the new spacer and the Teflon coated washers is illustrated in figure 2.
