Ignition Timing: Adjustments
Timing Scale Location:
1. Place transmission in neutral and turn off all lights and accessories.
2. Connect timing light to number 1 cylinder, and ground the carburetor switch with a jumper wire. Disconnect the vacuum hose to the Spark Control Computer (2Bbl only).
3. Connect the red lead of a suitable tachometer to the negative primary lead of the ignition coil, and the black lead to a good ground.
4. Start engine and allow to warm up to normal operating temperature.
5. Adjust curb idle speed if necessary. Aim timing light at the timing plate on the timing chain cover. If timing is within 2° of specifications no adjustment is required. If timing is not within specifications go to step 6.
6. Loosen distributor housing bolt and rotate the distributor housing until the correct timing is obtained. Refer to Specifications.
7. Tighten distributor housing hold-down bolt, and recheck timing. Recheck curb idle speed to ensure that it is still within specifications. Turn engine OFF.
NOTE: The magnetic timing probe socket is located 10° after top dead center. Do not use this socket to check or adjust timing with a standard timing light.
