SYMPTOM/CONDITION

Garbled sound from the headphone jack.

DIAGNOSIS

Using the customer's headphones, listen for a garbled sound from the headphones. If the sound is garbled or unclear, the following procedure should be performed.

PARTS REQUIRED

1 Electrical Terminal PN 4209499
1 Electrical Terminal PN 4209707
1 Self-Tapping Screw PN 9436885
1 12 Inch Piece 18 Gauge Wire NPN

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This condition may be caused by a missing ground wire in the instrument panel wiring harness. The repair procedure consists of the installation of a new ground wire which must be connected to the body wiring harness under the rear package shelf. This new ground wire is a substitute for the missing instrument panel ground wire.

1. Locate and disconnect the right rear speaker 4-way connector and then remove it from the "Christmas Tree" retaining clip. Remove the locking wedge from the male terminal of the connector. This connector is on the speaker pigtail harness.
2. Cut a 12" length of 18 gauge wire and solder electrical terminal, P/N 4209499, on one end and then solder electrical terminal, P/N 4209707, on the other end.

3. Snap the electrical terminal, P/N 4209707, into the vacant cavity of the speaker pigtail connector that mates with the H44 (14 BK/DG) ground circuit of the body harness. Insert the connector locking wedge.

4. Reconnect the speaker pigtail to the body harness and then reattach the connector to the "Christmas Tree" clip.

5. Place the self-tapping screw, P/N 9436885, through the eyelet terminal, P/N 4209499, and by using a power screwdriver, secure the new ground wire to a depressed part of the package shelf. Use caution not to damage the package shelf or the speaker.

6. Using the customer's headphones, check for proper sound. If the problem still exists, it is not caused by the missing instrument panel ground wire. Additional diagnosis and repairs will be required to eliminate this condition.
