Dashboard / Instrument Panel: Service and Repair
1. Disarm airbag, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair.Fig. 28 Exploded View Of Front & Rear Console Assembly:
2. Remove front and rear consoles as follows:
a. Place shift lever in N position.
b. Remove both side carpet panels from front console.
c. Remove two screw cover plates from rear console.
d. Remove storage box, navigator or cassette tape storage unit, as equipped.
e. Remove storage box as follows: (1) Open storage box door; (2) Remove four attaching screws, then the storage box.
f. Remove navigator as follows: (1) Remove two Torx head attaching screws; (2) Pull navigator straight out, then disconnect harness connector.
g. Pull cassette tape storage unit straight out to remove.
h. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, remove shift lever bezel as follows: (1) Remove two screws, then pull up up on shift knob to remove; (2) Loosen hex head screw on right side of shifter, slide gear selector off bracket, then remove cable; (3) Remove two shift lever bezel attaching screws, lift shift lever bezel from front and disconnect wiring harness, then remove shift lever bezel.
i. On models equipped with manual transaxle, remove shift lever bezel as follows: (1) Unscrew shifter knob from shifter shaft; (2) Remove nut and lift ring from shaft; (3) Remove two shift lever bezel attaching screws, lift shift lever bezel from front and disconnect wiring harness, then remove shift lever bezel.
j. On all models, disconnect rear console wiring harness.
k. Remove four front console mounting screws (two per side).
l. Remove two front console-to-instrument panel screws.
m. Slide console assembly rearward to unlatch console from instrument panel, then remove console assembly.
3. Remove right and left cowl side and scuff plate trim mouldings by removing five attaching screws per side.
4. Remove right and left A-pillar trim mouldings by removing two push-pin fasteners per side and disengaging from clip on B-pillar trim.

5. Remove instrument panel top cover by pushing forward and prying up, using a straightedge to aid in removal.
6. Disconnect bulkhead connector from brace under instrument panel.

7. Remove hood and parking brake release module as follows:
a. Disconnect parking brake release cable from parking brake mechanism.
b. Disconnect hood release cable from hood latch.
c. Pull parking brake release handle, then remove two module attaching screws.
d. Pull hood release handle, then remove two remaining module attaching screws.
e. Pull module and cable assembly rearward to remove.
8. Remove lower steering column cover by pulling straight out.
9. Lower steering column by removing five attaching nuts (six on models equipped with cruise control).
10. Disconnect wiring from steering column, cruise control switch, if equipped, stop lamp switch, parking brake switch and ignition switch.
11. Remove two steering column upper studs, then loosen side cowl tie-down bolts.
12. Remove one nut attaching A/C heater control unit to instrument panel, then remove five screws attaching instrument panel to cowl panel.
13. Roll instrument down, attach a hook to hold in place, then remove four screws and the defroster duct.
14. Disconnect body wiring from both side 25-way connectors.
15. Disconnect A/C heater control cable, wiring connectors and vacuum harness.
16. Disconnect antenna, wiring and radio ground strap.
17. Disconnect remaining electrical connections.
18. Remove both side front door weatherstrips in area of roll-up points.
19. Remove instrument panel pivot bolts, then the instrument panel assembly.
20. Reverse procedure to install.
