Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures

SYMPTOM ACTION

Cluster displays do not illuminate ^ Check for blown fuses, and check
after the vehicle is started. for battery and ignition voltage at the
instrument cluster.

^ Check the ground from the instrument
cluster electrical connector to the instrument
panel ground stud.



Instrument cluster asterisk (*) flashes, ^ This indicates a C2D Bus problem.
cluster is not displaying the correct Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
data.



Speedometer and odometer are inoperative. ^ If speedometer reads 0, or odometer is blank,
and cluster asterisk (*) is flashing, Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
^ If the asterisk is not flashing, check the
speed sensor operation or speed sensor wiring.



Oil, Fuel, or Temperature gauges inoperative. ^ If any of the gauges are blank,
and cluster asterisk (*) is flashing, Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
^ If asterisk (*) is not flashing, check for
defective sending units, sensors, or wiring.
(a) Sending units and wiring can be
checked by grounding the connector
leads, at the sending unit, in the
vehicle.
(b) With the ignition switch ON, grounding the
connector leads will cause the oil, fuel, or
temperature gauges to read maximum.
^ If the problem is with the voltmeter, check the
engine controller operation.

^ If the problem is with the temperature, oil, or fuel
gauges, check the body control computer.




Cluster display does not dim when headlamp ^ If the asterisk (*) is flashing,
switch is activated and rheostat rotated. Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
^ If asterisk (*) is not flashing, check
fuses in headlamp circuit.
^ Check for loose connections or defective wiring
from headlamp switch to body control computer.
^ Check for defective headlamp switch.
NOTE: The electronic cluster receives the display
intensity status from the body computer via the C2D bus.



Seat belt warning lamp does not illuminate. ^ Turn ignition switch ON, bulb should illuminate for
6 seconds. If not:
(a) Check for defective bulb and retest.
(b) Replace instrument cluster.



Low washer, door/deck, or check engine ^ Perform SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TEST to see if bulbs
lamps do not illuminate. will illuminate. If not:
(a) Check for defective bulb.
(b) Replace and retest bulb if needed.
^ If the asterisk (*) is flashing,
Reading and Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes
^ If asterisk (*) is not flashing, check the following:
(a) For CHECK ENGINE lamp, see Malfunction Indicator Lamp.
(b) For low washer fluid or door/deck lamps, check the
inputs to the body control computer.



Odometer display is blank. ^ If the asterisk (*) is flashing,

longer stored in the electronic cluster; ^ If asterisk (*) is not flashing, perform
but instead, in the body control computer. SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TEST. If code 921 appears
in the odometer display, replace body control computer.



US/Metric modes will not toggle, or trip ^ Perform SELF-DIAGNOSTIC TEST to determine if
odometer will not reset. the push buttons are operational.
