The engine is a 4-cylinder dual overhead camshaft power plant with cast iron block and aluminum cylinder head. Bore and stroke dimensions are 87.5 mm and 92.0 mm (3.44 x 3.62 in.).

The aluminum cylinder head features 16-valves, 4 valves per cylinder with dual in line valve guides and valve seat inserts. Eight 31.5 mm intake valves (2 per cylinder) on distributor side and eight 29.0 mm exhaust valves (2 per cylinder) on rearward facing side of cylinder head. The forward intake and rearward exhaust ports create an efficient cross-flow induction/exhaust system. Spark plugs are positioned in a well in the top center of the cylinder head.

The camshafts, one for intake valve and one for exhaust valve, actuation have 2 (identified) keyways for interchangeability. Each camshaft has 5 bearing journals with end flanges behind the number one journals to control end play. A sintered iron timing belt sprocket is indexed to and mounted on each camshaft nose. Hydrodynamic oil seals are used for oil control at the front of each camshaft.

The camshafts are driven by a crankshaft driven (timing) belt which also drives an accessory shaft. The accessory shaft, housed in the forward facing side of the block, in turn, drives the oil pump and distributor.

The turbocharged engine uses forged pistons that are dished, providing a (nominal) 7.3:1 compression ratio, and relieved to provide "free wheeling," valve/piston clearance. Full floating wrist pins attach the pistons to forged steel connecting rods.

The crankshaft is forged, fully counter-weighted, and supported by five 60 mm (2.36 in.) diameter main bearings. Diecast aluminum housings with hydrodynamic seals are attached to each end of the block for crankshaft "end" sealing.

The aluminum intake manifold is a "log" type with upper plenum and lower runners. The manifold is machined for fuel injectors with runners supplying each cylinder. This manifold is attached with 10 bolts.

The cast iron exhaust manifold is a 4 branch "fan" design with exhaust gasses directed to and through the attached turbocharger to exit a conical (articulated joint) outlet machined into the turbocharger housing. The exhaust manifold is attached to the cylinder head with 16 bolts.

The engine oil filter is attached to the base, located at the left front of the block radiator side. A mechanical antidrainback valve, in the filter adaptor, keeps the oil from draining out of the filter during shut down.
