Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair

CYLINDER HEAD

Cylinder head removal requires camshaft removal to expose cylinder head bolts, positioned below the camshafts.

Remove

(1) Remove timing belt cover and timing belt.

(2) Separate air conditioning compressor bracket from cylinder head.

(3) Separate turbocharger coolant lines and intake and exhaust manifolds from cylinder head.

(4) Remove cylinder head cover.

(5) Remove both camshafts.

(6) Remove cylinder head bolts in order.

Inspect

(1) Clean and carefully inspect for cracks around the spark plug and valve seats. Check for distortion. Cylinder head must be flat within 0.1 mm (.004 in.).

(2) The flatness check should be performed along the two diagonals and the four sides of the rectangle, with the vertices on the head bolt holes at the outer edge.

Since the Cylinder head bolts are torqued using the torque yield procedure they should be examined BEFORE reuse. If the threads are "necked down" the bolts should be replaced.

Necking can be checked by holding a scale or straight edge against the threads. If all the threads do not contact the scale the bolt should be replaced.

Install

(1) Clean cylinder block top surface. Install new head gasket.

(2) Install cylinder head, lubricate head bolt threads and tighten head bolts in sequence using a 3 step method. Tighten in steps as follows:

First-4 N.m (32 Ft. Lbs.)

Second-9 N.m (50 Ft. Lbs.)

Third-88 N.m (65 Ft. Lbs.)

Fourth- +1/4 Turn*

*DO not use a torque wrench for this step.
