Evaporative Emissions System: Testing and Inspection

SYSTEM SERVICE

Ensure all vacuum hoses and electrical wires are routed clear of the exhaust manifold to prevent deterioration due to the high temperature. Vacuum hoses should always be a minimum of three inches from the exhaust manifold.
NOTE: Use only fuel resistant hoses when servicing the evaporative control system.

CANISTER PURGE SOLENOID TEST

1. Ensure all vacuum hose connections are correct and not leaking.
2. Disconnect solenoid electrical connector from wiring harness. The electrical connector is a four pin connector that connects four individual solenoids to their individual ground circuits. The pink wire is the ground wire for the Canister Purge Solenoid, and the dark blue wire is the power wire from the ignition switch to all four solenoids.
3. Connect the dark blue wire to the battery positive terminal and the pink wire to ground, then listen for clicking noise from solenoid when it is connected and disconnected to battery positive terminal.
4. If a clicking noise is not heard, replace the solenoid.
5. If a clicking noise is heard, and the system does not function properly, follow voltage back through the circuit to the SMEC.
