Automatic Temperature Control - Windows Fog Up

NO.: 24-18-92
GROUP: Air Conditioning
DATE: Dec. 14, 1992

SUBJECT:
Interior Window Fog With Auto Temp Control

MODELS:

1993 (AC) Dynasty/New Yorker/New Yorker Salon
1993 (AY) Imperial/New Yorker Fifth Avenue

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Automatic Temperature Control (ATC) equipped vehicles have electric actuators to move the doors of the A/C-heater case. 1993 model year vehicles built prior to MDH 1101xx used a plastic fresh air/recirculation door that the actuator may bend/flex on some vehicles, putting the door in an "over center" travel condition. When the "over center" travel occurs, the door system malfunctions and reverses actuation, changing to recirculation air when fresh air is demanded and vice versa. With the climate control system recirculating moist interior air and the exterior ambient temperature below the compressor cut out switch temperature setting, the interior of the windows may fog.

DIAGNOSIS:

Verify MDH on the vehicles certification label, if the vehicle was built prior to 1101xx perform the repair procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

1 Door, Fresh Air/Recirculation 5210056

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the plastic recirculation door with one made of steel.

1. Remove the air bag module cover or console, whichever the vehicle is equipped with.

2. Remove the glove box/ash tray module.

3. Remove the right side kick panel/sill plate.

4. Remove the five screws attaching the metal dash support bracket.

5. Remove the two screws and two fasteners on the right side of the silencer panel and pull the panel down out of the way to gain access to the recirculation housing attached to the A/C - heater case.

NOTE:
IF THE ACTUATOR ARM IS IN A 1 O'CLOCK TO 3 O'CLOCK POSITION, THE ACTUATOR WILL HAVE TO BE POWERED UP TO ROTATE THE POSITION OF THE ARM TO A 7 O'CLOCK TO 9 O'CLOCK POSITION. REFER TO ILLUSTRATION FOR PROPER ARM ORIENTATION. THE PROCEDURE TO ROTATE THE ACTUATOR ARM IS DESCRIBED IN STEP 9 OF THE REPAIR PROCEDURE.

6. Disconnect the wiring connector, the fresh air/recirculation actuator and remove the two screws attaching the actuator mounting bracket to the fresh air/recirculation housing and remove the actuator mounting bracket assembly. This step is necessary to gain access to one screw attaching the fresh air/recirculation housing to the A/C - heater case.

7. Remove the eight screws attaching the fresh air/recirculation housing to the A/C - heater case.

8. Remove the plastic fresh air/recirculaton door from the housing.

9. If it is necessary to re-orientate the actuator arm to the 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock position, turn the ignition switch to the on position and loosely engage the wiring connector to the fresh air/recirculation actuator so the connector can be disconnected quickly. Select defrost and the fresh air/recirculation actuator arm will start to rotate clockwise, immediately turn the ATC system off and the arm will reverse rotation. Disconnect the wiring connector when the actuator is in the 7 o'clock to 9 o'clock position. Turn the ignition switch off.

10. Install the steel fresh aidrecirculation door into the housing.

11. Reverse steps 1-7 for reassembly.
