Wiper/Turn Signal Switch - Inconsistent Delay/Canceling

NO: 08-11-95 Rev. A

GROUP: Electrical

DATE: Apr. 7, 1995

SUBJECT:
Windshield Wiper Intermittent Delay Times Inconsistent/Right Turn Signal Intermittently Does Not Cancel

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 08-11-95 DATED MAR. 17, 1995 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ADDITIONAL SYMPTOMS, PARTS, AND REPAIR PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN ADDED.

MODELS:
1995 (JA) Cirrus/Stratus

DISCUSSION:

Correct delay times in intermittent wiper mode vary from approximately 18 seconds to 0.5 seconds with vehicle speed above 10 MPH (delay times are doubled with vehicle speed below 10 MPH).

In order for the intermittent wiper system to operate as designed, the Body Control Module (BCM) must learn the resistive value of the first switch detent. This calibration procedure is currently being performed at the assembly plant. However, if the BCM or Multifunction Switch are replaced in the vehicle, the calibration procedure must be performed by the technician.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Windshield wiper intermittent mode delay times are inconsistent, or do not get shorter as the switch is turned toward the low speed position, and/or right turn signal does not cancel intermittently.

DIAGNOSIS:

^ If the right turn signal intermittently does not cancel, replace the multifunction switch and recalibrate the BCM/multifunction switch.

^ It the wiper delay times are inconsistent, recalibrate the multifunction switch. It this does not correct the condition, replace the multifunction switch and recalibrate again.

PARTS REQUIRED:

AR 4608314 Switch, Multifunction W/O Fog Lamps

AR 4608317 Switch, Multifunction With Fog Lamps

AR 4608316 Switch Multifunction With Rear Fog Lamps (Export Only)

AR 4608319 Switch Multifunction With Front and Rear Fog Lamps (Export Only)

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves replacing the Multitunction Switch if necessary and calibrating the BCM to the Multitunction Switch.

A. CALIBRATING MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

1. Turn the ignition switch on.

2. With the Diagnostic Readout Box (DRB III), go to Body/Body Computer/Miscellaneous and select "Reset Wiper Switch Minimum."

3. Follow instruction on DRB III.

NOTE:
THE DRB III MUST BE UPDATED WITH RELEASE 16 OR HIGHER TO PERFORM THIS FUNCTION.

4. Verity intermittent wiper operation.

B. REPLACING MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

1. Record radio settings, disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.

2. Remove upper steering column cover.

3. Remove multifunction switch mounting screws.

4. Disconnect wire connectors and lift the switch straight up to remove.

5. Remove combination flasher and install in new multifunction switch.

6. For installation reverse the above procedure. Torque multitunction switch retaining screws to 2.3 Nm (20 in.lbs.), and steering column cover retaining screws to 2 Nm (17 in.lbs.).

7. Install negative battery cable and set radio stations and clock.

8. CALIBRATE BCM TO MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH (Step A Above).

POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
