Exhaust System: Testing and Inspection
EXCESSIVE EXHAUST NOISE -- UNDER HOOD1. Exhaust manifold cracked or broken -- Replace manifold
2. Manifold to cylinder head leak (b) Tighten manifold and/or replace gasket
3. EGR Valve Leakage
a. EGR Valve to Manifold Gasket -- Tighten nuts or replace gasket
b. EGR Valve to EGR Tube Gasket -- Tighten nuts or replace gasket
c. EGR Tube to Manifold Tube Nut -- Tighten tube nut
4. Exhaust Flex-Joint to Manifold Leak -- Tighten joint and/or replace gasket
5. Exhaust Flex-Joint -- Replace catalytic converter assembly
6. Pipe and shell noise from front -- Characteristic of single wall pipes exhaust pipe
EXCESSIVE EXHAUST NOISE
1. Leaks at pipe joints -- Tighten clamps at leaking joints
2. Burned or blown or rusted out muffler, tailpipe of exhaust pipe. -- Replace muffler or muffler tailpipe or exhaust pipe.
3. Burned or blown or rusted out resonator -- Replace resonator and exhaust spouts
4. Restriction in exhaust module -- Remove restriction, if possible, or replace as necessary.
5. Converter material in muffler -- Replace muffler and converter assemblies. Check fuel injection and ignition systems for proper operation.
