Engine - Valve Train Ticking Noise
NO: 09-01-96GROUP: Engine
DATE: Feb. 23, 1996
SUBJECT:
Engine Valve Train Noise
MODELS:
1993 - 1996 (LH) Concorde/Intrepid/Vision/LHS/New Yorker
NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 3.5L ENGINE.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Heavy clicking or ticking noise heard on the top of the engine (cylinder head cover area). Noise not likely to vary with engine temperature, but will increase in frequency with engine RPM.
NOTE:
DO NOT CONFUSE NORMAL INJECTOR OR PURGE SOLENOID CLICK WITH THIS NOISE.
DIAGNOSIS:
If noise can be heard internally at either cylinder head cover, check for correct engine oil level. If oil level is above the "FULL" mark or below the "ADD" mark, the oil may have been aerated which will result in noisy hydraulic lash adjusters. If necessary, make oil level correction and idle engine until noise goes away (may take up to 60 minutes of continuous idling). If noise persists, perform Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This bulletin involves inspecting and replacing worn/damaged valve train components.
1. Record preset radio stations, disconnect and isolate negative battery cable.
2. Remove air cleaner assembly and intake manifold plenum.
3. Disconnect and relocate spark plug wires.
4. Remove spark plug tube nuts and 0-rings.
5. Remove cylinder head cover bolts and remove cover.
6. Remove rocker arm assembly bolts and remove assembly.
7. Inspect the bottom side of the intake rocker arms for evidence of contact with the camshaft at the side that is closest to the camshaft bearing journal on each of the rockers as shown. Contact will appear as freshly shaved, bright aluminum rather than the oil-stained, dull-looking machined surface normally present. Contact may occur to more than one rocker in a bank.
8. If contact is not evident, locate and replace rocker arms that have soft or spongy lash adjusters. Lash adjusters should not feel soft or compress easily. Visually inspect the various components for any other damage, assemble rocker assembly and check other cylinder bank for the interference condition.
9. If contact is evident, replace the damaged rocker arm(s) and camshaft for the problem cylinder bank as described on page 9-62 of the 1996 New Yorker/LHS/Concorde/Intrepid/Vision Service Manual (Pub. No. 81-270-6140).
NOTE:
DURING DISASSEMBLY, INSPECT THE CAMSHAFT THRUST PLATE AND REPLACE IF THERE IS ANY WEAR PRESENT WITH P/N 4556518. DURING ASSEMBLY, NEW PEDESTAL DOWEL(S), P/N 4573379, AND CAMSHAFT SPROCKET ATTACHING SCREWS, P/N 6502291617, MUST BE USED.
10. Connect negative battery cable, set radio presets and clock.
11. If noise condition is present after engine assembly, idle engine to remove trapped air from system (may take up to 60 minutes of continuous idling).
POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
