Parking Brake System: Service and Repair
STANDARD PROCEDURE - PARKING BRAKE AUTOMATIC ADJUSTER LOCKOUTWARNING:
- THE AUTO ADJUSTING FEATURE OF THE PARKING BRAKE MECHANISM USED ON THIS VEHICLE CONTAINS A CLOCKSPRING LOADED TO APPROXIMATELY 20 POUNDS. KEEP YOUR HANDS OUT OF THE AREA OF THE AUTO ADJUSTER MECHANISM. FAILURE TO OBSERVE CAUTION IN HANDLING THIS MECHANISM COULD LEAD TO SERIOUS INJURY.
- DO NOT REMOVE THE LOCKOUT PIN BEFORE INSTALLING THE REAR PARKING BRAKE CABLES TO THE EQUALIZER.
- WHEN REPAIRS TO THE PARK BRAKE LEVER OR CABLES IS REQUIRED, THE AUTO ADJUSTER MECHANISM MUST BE LOADED AND LOCKED OUT BEFORE SERVICE.
Following is a procedure for locking out the parking brake automatic adjuster. Another for unlocking the parking brake automatic adjuster follows that.
ADJUSTER LOCKING OUT (LOADING)
1. Remove shift knob from shifter. Shift knob is attached to shifter using a hex head set screw. Access to set screw is from the front side of the shift knob.
2. Remove the shift bezel from the center console). Shift bezel is removed by carefully pulling upward along the edge until the retaining clips unlatch from the center console.

3. Disconnect shift bezel wiring harness from vehicle wiring harness.
4. Remove screw attaching center console to console bracket.
5. Remove the 4 screws mounting the storage tray and lid to the center console. Remove the lid and storage tray from the center console.
6. Raise parking brake hand lever to the applied position. This is required for clearance to remove center console.
7. Remove center console from vehicle.
8. Lower parking brake lever handle.

9. Grasp parking brake lever output cable by hand and pull upward. Continue pulling on cable until a 3/16 in. drill bit can be inserted into handle and sector gear of parking brake mechanism. This will lock the parking brake mechanism and take tension off parking brake cables.
ADJUSTER UNLOCKING (UNLOADING)
NOTE: The parking brake lever can be in any position when releasing the auto adjuster. To ease installation of center console, it is advisable to pull parking brake lever handle all the way up before removing lockout pin.
1. Be sure rear parking brake cables are properly installed in the equalizer.
2. Pull parking brake lever handle all the way up.
3. Using pliers, firmly grasp park brake lever locking pin. Quickly remove the locking pin from the park brake lever mechanism. This will allow the park brake lever mechanism to correctly adjust the park brake cables.
4. Install center console.
5. Install the 4 screws, mounting console, storage tray and lid.
6. Install screw mounting front of center console to console bracket.

7. Connect shift bezel wiring harness to vehicle wiring harness.
8. Install shift bezel on center console. Shift bezel is installed by firmly pressing it down on center console until the 4 retaining clips are holding it to the center console.
9. Install shift knob on shifter. Install and securely tighten set screw holding shift knob to shifter. Access to set screw is from the front side of the shift knob.
10. Cycle parking brake lever once to position park brake cables. Then return the parking brake lever its released position. Check the rear wheels of the vehicle, they should rotate *freely without dragging.
