THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 21-011-04, DATED DECEMBER 18, 2004, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDE AN UPDATED VEHICLE BUILD DATE AND UPDATED FAILURE CODE.
SUBJECT:
Power Transfer Unit (PTU) Click/Pop Sound
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves diagnosing and if necessary, replacing the PTU.
MODELS:
2004 - 2005 (CS) Pacifica
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with All Wheel Drive (AWD) **built on or before January 14, 2005 (MDH 0114XX)**.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The vehicle operator may describe a popping/clicking sound from the front or center of the vehicle. The condition may be more noticeable during acceleration after drive to reverse or reverse to drive shifts and/or during low speed tight turns. DO NOT replace the PTU, until the following diagnostic procedures are performed.
DIAGNOSIS:
1. Brake torque the vehicle (forward to reverse & reverse to forward). Listen for the click/pop sound at the front hub.
2. Loosen the hub nuts to zero foot pounds. Brake torque the vehicle (forward to reverse & reverse to forward). Listen for the click at the front hub.
3. If the click/pop sound was eliminated by loosening the hub nuts, this bulletin does not apply. Perform service bulletin 03-001-03 Rev A. If the click/pop sound is still present, proceed to the next step.
CAUTION:
This test drive should be performed in a parking lot with sufficient open space for maneuvering without hitting any obstacle.
4. Turn the steering wheel in either direction to the wheel stop.
5. Shift the transmission from park to drive and roll forward. Shift the transmission from drive to reverse and roll rearward.
6. Listen for single/multiple clicks/pops from the center of the vehicle after the vehicle begins to roll.
7. Shift from park to drive and lightly accelerate forward. Shift from drive to reverse and lightly accelerate rearward.
8. Listen for single/multiple clicks/pops from the center of the vehicle after the vehicle begins to roll.
9. If the technician verifies the noise is coming from the PTU, perform the Repair Procedure. If the noise is not coming from the PTU, further diagnosis is necessary. This bulletin does not apply.
SPECIAL TOOLS/EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Replace the PTU. Refer to the service information available in TechCONNECT. Reference: Service Info, 21 - Transmission/Transaxle/Power Transfer Unit - Removal and Installation.
