Steering - Honk/Hiss/Groan On Low Speed Turns

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 19-003-09, DATED July 10, 2009 WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. THIS IS A COMPLETE REVISION AND NO ASTERISKS HAVE BEEN USED TO HIGHLIGHT REVISIONS.

SUBJECT:
Steering Gear Honk, Hiss or Groan During Low Speed Parking Lot Maneuvers

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves replacing the power steering return hose and/or steering gear.

MODELS:

2009-2010 LX 300 / Magnum / Charger

2009-2010 LC Challenger

NOTE:
This information applies to 5.7L RWD models built prior to January 21, 2010

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Some customers may experience a honk, hiss or groan sound coming from the steering system during low speed parking lot maneuvers.

DIAGNOSIS:
Drive the vehicle slowly and make turns to the right and left similar to those made in a parking lot. If the sound is experienced Perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

NOTE:
Gear application is based on part removed from the vehicle.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:





1. Is the vehicle equipped with an external power steering cooler as shown in (Fig. 1)

a. Yes >> Proceed to Step # 2 and use p/n 68067353AB.

b. No >> Proceed to Step # 2 and use p/n 68044363AA.

2. Replace the power steering return hose. Following the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Group 19 > Steering > Pump > Hose, Power Steering Return > Removal/Installation > GEAR TO COOLER.

3. Verify the Honk, Hiss or Groan sound is eliminated after power steering return hose installation. Is there still a Honk, Hiss or Groan sound?

a. Yes >> Proceed to Step # 4

b. No >> Proceed to Step # 6

4. Replace the steering gear. Following the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Group 19 > Steering > Gear > Removal / Installation, replace the steering gear based on part number found on the vehicle.

5. Verify the Honk, Hiss or Groan sound is eliminated after gear installation.

6. Return vehicle to the customer.
