P1792
DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1792 EEPROM CHECKSUM ERRORSystem Description
The Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (EEPROM) is a permanent memory chip that is physically soldered within the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The EEPROM contains the program and the calibration information required for engine, transmission, and powertrain diagnostics operation. When the EEPROM programming malfunctions, Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1792 will set. The EEPROM must be re-programmed. If the re-programming is unsuccessful, DTC P1792 will remain set and the PCM will have to be replaced.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
- The PCM is not properly programmed.
Action Taken When the DTC Sets
- The PCM will record operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. This information will be stored in the Failure Records buffer.
- A history DTC is stored.
Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC
- A history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm up cycles without a fault.
- DTCs can be cleared by using a scan tool.
Test Description
The number(s) below refer to step(s) on the diagnostic table.
1. The On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) II System Check prompts the technician to complete some basic checks and store the freeze frame and failure records data on the scan tool, if applicable. This creates an electronic copy of the data taken when the malfunction occurred. The information is then stored on the scan tool for later reference.
4. The replacement PCM must be programmed. Refer to the latest Techline procedure for PCM reprogramming.
