Cylinder Head Assembly: Service and Repair
Fig. 13 Exploded View Of Cylinder Head.:
Refer to Fig. 13, when servicing this cylinder head.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine oil and cooling system.
2. Remove timing belt, refer to TIMING BELT.
3. Remove throttle body hose and oil cooler hose from throttle body, then disconnect brake booster hose at surge tank.
4. On models with A/C, remove A/C idle-up vacuum hose.
5. On all models, disconnect vacuum hose connecting atmospheric pressure VSV with manifold, then vacuum hose connecting Bimetal VSV with surge tank.
6. Disconnect pressure sensor connector, then fuel hose at upper side of fuel filter. Use cloth to prevent fuel splashing.
7. Disconnect vacuum hose connecting pressure regulator with surge tank, then remove radiator lower hose inlet pipe.
8. Remove heater hose from inlet pipe, then radiator upper hose from cylinder head.
9. Disconnect heater hose from intake manifold, then remove EGR pipe.
10. Disconnect idle-up VSV and EGR VSV connectors, then intake air temperature sensor connector.
11. Disconnect wire clamp attached at back side of surge tank, then fuel hose No. 2 between cold start injector and fuel delivery pipe.
12. Disconnect throttle body and cold start injector connectors, then remove surge tank stay.
13. Disconnect vacuum hose connecting oil filler cap with surge tank, then remove oil filler cap with vacuum hose.
14. Disconnect fuel hose clamp at back side of surge tank, then remove surge tank attaching bolts. Remove surge tank and gasket.
15. Disconnect injector connector, the remove fuel return hose from pressure regulator.
16. Remove fuel hose No. 1 from delivery pipe, then delivery pipe from intake manifold.
17. Remove three fuel delivery pipe insulators from intake manifold, then pull out fuel injectors.
18. Remove engine harness clamp with intake pipe, then disconnect water temperature sensor connector.
19. On models with A/C, disconnect water temperature switch connector of air conditioner.
20. Disconnect cold start injector time switch and water temperature sender gauge connectors, then radiator fan motor connector.
21. Disconnect engine ground terminal of intake manifold, then remove engine wire clamp under cold start injector time switch.
22. Remove engine wire clamp from water outlet pipe bracket clamp, then disconnect oil cooler hose from intake manifold.
23. Remove intake manifold attaching bolts, then vacuum hose between Bimetal VSV and charcoal canister.
24. Remove intake manifold and gasket, then resistive cords.
25. Remove spark plugs, then disconnect oxygen sensor and distributor connectors.
26. Remove exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then exhaust manifold cover.
27. Remove exhaust manifold stay, then oxygen sensor.
28. Remove exhaust manifold attaching bolts, then exhaust manifold.
29. Remove distributor, then alternator bracket from cylinder head.

Fig. 15 Cylinder Head Bolt Tightening Sequence.:
31. Remove cylinder head bolts progressively over three stages following sequence shown in Fig. 14.
32. Remove cylinder head.
33. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Install all new gaskets. Do not reuse old gaskets.
b. Install new O-ring on each injector. Do not reuse old O-rings.
c. Tighten cylinder head bolts progressively over three stages following sequence shown in Fig. 15.
d. Fill camshaft chamber of each cylinder and distributor drive gear chamber with oil.
e. Lubricate O-ring of each injector before installing delivery pipe.
f. Torque all bolts/nuts to specifications.
