DISCUSSION:

When replacing torque shaft bearings, both the front and rear bearings should be replaced at the same time. The following repair procedure should be followed to avoid repeat failures.

PARTS REQUIRED

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This repair involves the proper replacement procedure for the torque shaft bearings.

1. Remove the rear drive line module from the vehicle, as outlined in the appropriate service manual.

2. Remove both the front and rear bearings and seals.

3. Using aluminum oxide sand paper # 150 or # 180, remove any corrosion from the tube bearing bore and from the shaft bearing journal. The replacement bearing must be a slip fit on both the torque shaft journal and tube bore.

4. Install the replacement bearing and seal assembly, PN 4637106, in the overrunning clutch housing. Secure the bearing to the overrunning clutch housing with the snap ring, PN 4486166.

5. Place the overrunning clutch housing on a clean flat surface with the seal facing up, see Figure 1.

6. Holding the torque shaft vertically, carefully insert the shaft into the seal and bearing.

7. Secure the torque shaft and overrunning clutch housing assembly with the snap ring, PN 4486165.

8. Position the torque shaft and overrunning clutch housing assembly in a vertical position with the rear housing face on a clean flat surface, see Figure 2.

9. Install the replacement bearing, PN 4486164, on the torque shaft journal.

10. Holding the torque tube vertically, slide the tube over the torque shaft. The tube should slide over the front bearing without any forcing and/or pounding.

11. Install the torque tube bearing guard (plate), PN 4518506, and retainer, PN 4518551. Ensure the bearing retainer is installed with the fingers pointing toward the shield.

12. Install the drive line module.
