Liftgate to Rear Fascia - Gap Too Small

Liftgate To Rear Fascia Gap Too Small

MODELS:

1996 (NS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager
1996 (GS) Chrysler Voyager (European Market)

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The gap between the rear fascia and the liftgate is too small, or possibly interference may exist.

DIAGNOSIS:

Measure the gap between the bottom of the liftgate and the top surface of the fascia. If anywhere along the gap the clearance is less than 1/8 in. (3 mm), perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:





This bulletin involves adjusting the rear fascia support/bumper reinforcement and fascia locating brackets.

1. Open the liftgate.

2. Raise the vehicle on an appropriate hoist.

3. Remove the 3 screws holding the rear fascia in each wheel well areas.

4. Remove the 4 plastic rivets holding the bottom of the rear fascia to the rear bumper/fascia support.

5. Disengage the hooks on the sides of the fascia from the slots in the locating/mounting bracket.

6. Separate the rear fascia from the vehicle.





7. Close the liftgate and measure the rear bumper fascia support to liftgate gap and adjust as necessary to obtain a 1/2 in. (12.5 mm) gap, refer to Figure 2.





8. Measure the vertical location of the rear fascia locating/mounting brackets under the tail lamp portion of the quarter/aperture panel, a 3/8 in. (9 mm) gap should exist, refer to Figure 3. If the rear fascia locating/mounting brackets require adjustment, mark the location of the sides of the brackets on the quarter/aperture panel to aid in proper alignment during reinstallation. Remove the two attaching screws for each bracket and slot the holes in the brackets to allow adjustment in the required direction. Install the rear fascia locating/mounting brackets. and position to obtain a 3/8 in. (9 mm) gap.

9. Open the liftgate and engage the tabs on the back of the fascia into the slots in the rear bumper/fascia support. Engage the side hooks on the fascia onto the locating/mounting brackets.

10. Verify the 4 tabs under the liftgate opening are still engaged.

11. Install the 3 screws holding the rear fascia in each wheel well area.

12. Install 4 rivets (P/N 6500911) to attaching the bottom of the rear fascia to the rear bumper/fascia support.

13. Lower the vehicle and close the liftgate.
