Steering Column - Clunk /Popping Noise

1996 (NS) Town & Country/Caravan/Voyager

NOTE:
THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT AT ST. LOUIS ASSEMBLY PRIOR TO JUNE 30, 1995 (MDH 0630XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

Some NS vehicles built prior to 6/30/95 at St. Louis South Assembly ("B" in the 12th VIN character position) may experience a clunk/popping noise that sometimes may be felt through the steering column.

DIAGNOSIS:

Test drive the vehicle at low speed. Listen and feel for the clunk/popping noise while turning the steering wheel off center a few degrees and accelerating and decelerating. If the clunk/popping noise is heard or felt perform the Repair Procedure.

PARTS REQUIRED:

AR 4318066 Mopar White Spray Lube

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

This bulletin involves lubricating the intermediate steering shaft.

1. With the ignition switch in the locked position turn the steering wheel to the left until the steering wheel is locked.





2. Disconnect the steering column shaft coupler from the steering gear intermediate coupler (refer to Fig. 1).

3. Push the intermediate shaft down approximately 2 inches.

4. Spray Mopar White Spray Lube (P/N 4318066) between the shaft and tube into all four flutes of the tube, 1-2 seconds spray per flute (refer to Fig 2).

5. Push and pull the shaft in and out 5-6 times to insure the lubricant works it way down the shaft, THIS MUST BE DONE TO INSURE A LONG LASTING REPAIR. Wipe any excess lubricant from the shaft.

6. Connect the intermediate shaft coupler to the steering column shaft coupler. Torque the nut to 250 in. lbs. (28 Nm) and install the safety pin.
