Cooling System - Draining and Filling

DRAINING
1. To drain cooling system move temperature selector for heater to full heat with engine running (to provide vacuum for actuation).
2. Without removing radiator pressure cap and with system not under pressure, shut engine off and open draincock.
3. The coolant reserve tank should empty first, then remove radiator pressure cap. (if not, see Testing and Inspection).
4. Remove the vent plug to vent. Removal of the vent plug is required because these thermostats do not have an air vent and prevents air flow through it. This allows the coolant to drain from the engine block.

REFILLING
1. First clean system to remove old glycol.
2. Fill the system, using the correct antifreeze.
a. Fill the system to 50 percent of its capacity with 100 percent glycol.
b. Then complete filling system with water.
3. This requires the removal of the plug on the front of the cylinder head. When coolant reaches this hole install the vent plug and tighten to 7 Nm (60 inch lbs.).
4. Continue filling system until full, this provides better heater performance.

NOTE: Be careful not to spill coolant on drive belts or the generator.

5. Fill coolant reserve system to at least the MAX Mark with 50/50 solution. It may be necessary to add coolant to the reserve tank after three or four warm up/cool down cycles to maintain coolant level between the MAX and MIN mark. This will allow trapped air to be removed from the system.
