Diesel Fuel System - Hard or No Start/Low Power: Overview

THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES SERVICE BULLETIN 14-002-04 DATED SEPTEMBER 28, 2004, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES. ALL REVISIONS ARE HIGHLIGHTED WITH **ASTERISKS** AND INCLUDES A REVISED STEP 8.

SUBJECT:
Common Rail Fuel Injection Diagnosis

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin provides diagnostic procedures for the fuel injection system.

MODELS:

2004 (VA) Sprinter

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

The vehicle operator may describe:

^ The engine cranks but does not start.

^ The engine has a long crank time (More than 3 seconds after the glow plug lamp in the instrument cluster is off and the ambient temperature is above 10° C (50° F).

^ The engine may have poor performance or lack power while driving.

DIAGNOSIS:

The following items should be checked to ensure accurate diagnosis:

^ Battery voltage must be above 12.0 volts. If necessary, install a battery charger and verify that the charging rate provides above 13.5 volts.

^ Engine cranking speed must be above 200 RPM.

^ The glow plug system must be working properly. Refer to the information available in TechCONNECT. Refer to 8 - Electrical/Ignition Control - Operation.

^ The fuel tank level gauge should be above 1/4.

^ Turn off all accessories. For example; A/C, auxiliary heater, blower motor, radio.





^ Complete the "Service Advisor Checklist" and attach it to any part(s) that are returned (Fig. 1).

NOTE:
The following diagnostic procedure can be performed with the DRBIII(R).

1. Attach the DRBIII(R) to the vehicle.

2. Perform a "Module Scan".

3. Select each DTC and record the data on the repair order for later reference.

4. Erase the DTCs.

5. Try to reproduce the Symptom/Condition. Test drive the vehicle if necessary. Document the current situation on your repair order.

6. In case of a DTC with the status "CURRENT and/or STORED", follow the service information for that DTC and repair accordingly.

7. Do a visual check of the components related to the DTC and/or Symptom/Condition. Document any problems found on your repair order.

8. Document ambient temperature under which failure occurred on your repair order.

9. Proceed with trouble shooting and repair based on the following:

a. If the vehicle operator describes, engine cranks but does not start, proceed to Diagnostic Procedure A.

b. If the vehicle operator describes, engine has long crank time (more than 3 seconds after glow plug lamp in the instrument cluster is off and ambient temperature is above 10° C (50° F), proceed to Diagnostic Procedure B.

c. If the vehicle operator describes the engine has poor performance or looses power while driving, proceed to Diagnostic Procedure C.

The Operation Diagnostic labor operations can be located in the 80/90 - Special Services tab in the Labor Operations Manual. Usage of these operations must follow the guidelines outlined in the Global Warranty Administration Manual.
