NUMBER: 23-031-07

GROUP: Body

DATE: August 1, 2007

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING PROVIDED IN ADVANCE. DO NOT ORDER PARTS OR PERFORM ANY ACTIONS RELATED TO THIS BULLETIN UNTIL AUGUST 16, 2007.

SUBJECT:
Vibration At Highway Speeds Or Clunk/Squeak Sound At Low Speeds

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting and if necessary, adjust the body damper at the left front crossmember.

MODELS:

2007 (KA) Nitro

NOTE:
This bulletin applies vehicles equipped with a gasoline engine and 20" wheels (sales code WP2 OR TX1).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The vehicle operator may describe a vibration at highway speeds or a squeak or clunk at low speeds.

DIAGNOSIS:

Lift the vehicle on a suitable hoist. The body mass damper is located outside of left front frame rail and behind lower radiator support crossmember. Check for interference between body damper and crossmember (Fig. 1). A minimum of .125 in. (3 mm) clearance is required. If .125 in. (3 mm) clearance is NOT measured between the body mass damper and the crossmember, perform the Repair Procedure. If the minimum .125 in. (3 mm) clearance IS measured, further diagnosis is required and this Service Bulletin does not apply.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Refer to the detailed removal procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Service Info > 13 - FRAMES & BUMPERS > BUMPERS > FASCIA - FRONT > REMOVAL > FASCIA FRONT to remove the fascia from the vehicle. Set the fascia aside on a protected surface.

CAUTION:
Care should be taken not to damage painted surfaces.

2. Loosen, (do NOT remove) all (3) attaching bolts for body mass damper.

3. Hold the body mass damper away from the crossmember to obtain the minimum clearance of .125 in. (3 mm) between damper and crossmember.

4. Tighten both upper damper mounting bolts starting with either top bolt to 35 lb ft (47 N-m).

5. After both top mounting bolts are torqued into place, tighten the bottom bolt to 35 lb ft (47N-m).

6. Refer to the detailed installation procedures available in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Service Info > 13 - FRAMES & BUMPERS > BUMPERS > FASCIA - FRONT > INSTALLATION > FASCIA FRONT to install the fascia on the vehicle.
