Chrome Clad Wheel Creak
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves applying RTV to the wheels to isolate the chrome cladding from the aluminum wheel backing.
MODELS:
2007 (KA) Nitro
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with the following Chrome Clad Aluminum Wheels: 17 inch Chrome Clad - Bright Finish - Sales Code "WPV", 20 inch Chrome Clad - Bright Finish, Sales Code "WP2" and 20 inch Chrome Clad - Platinum Finish, Sales Code "WPG".
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Creaking or clicking noise coming from wheels while vehicle is travelling less than 10 mph.
The sound may be more prevalent when turning in a tight circle.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the customer indicates that the condition is present, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the wheels.
2. Open the RTV, p/n 04883971, and remove foil seal. Replace/screw dispensing Nozzle back onto RTV Tube. Cut tip off nozzle, allowing for 3/16 to 1/4 diameter hole in nozzle.
NOTE:
Use only RTV part number 04883971. Other RTV sealants may contain corrosive chemicals which could damage the plating n the chrome clad wheels.
3. Wipe down surface on the back side of the wheel of wheel removing brake dust, use compressed air to blow out dust and debris from between cladding and wheel( Clean the wheel with an appropriate solvent.
4. Dispense RTV into gap between cladding and wheel so entire gap is filled and approximately 1/5 or .6 oz. RTV is dispensed into each gap. It is critical to completely fill the gap between the chrome cladding and the aluminum backing( ). Wipe off any excessive sealer making sure that no sealer is visible when viewing the wheel from the front.
5. Repeat procedure for each wheel. Allow the RTV to cure for a minimum of 3 hours.
NOTE:
It is important to allow the sealer to cure for a minimum of three hours to provide proper adhesion to the surfaces.
6. After the sealer has cured, balance the wheels.
7. Install the wheels and tighten the lug nuts to 135 Nm, (100 Ft. Lbs.)
