P0514-BATTERY TEMPERATURE SENSOR PERFORMANCE

For a complete wiring diagram, refer to the Wiring Information Electrical Diagrams.

Theory of Operation

The Engine Control Module (ECM) monitors the battery temperature to help determine when it is ok too charge the battery. Charging a battery that is too hot or too cold may damage the battery. At key on after a cold soak, the ECM compares the battery temperature reading to the ambient intake air temperature and coolant temperature. The key on monitor is disabled for ambient temperatures below -6.7°C (20°F). The ECM looks for the temperature reading to change over time after the engine is started. This monitor is used to detect a stuck sensor. Both the key-on and engine running portions of this rationality error require that the diagnostic fails in two consecutive drive cycles before the MIL lamp is lit. The ECM turns off the MIL lamp when the diagnostic runs and passes in four consecutive drive cycles.

- When Monitored:
At key on after a cold soak and ambient temperature above -6.7°C (20°F), the The Engine Control Module (ECM) compares the battery temperature reading to the ambient intake air temperature and coolant temperature.

- Set Condition:
At key on engine off, the Battery Temperature Sensor reads out of range as compared to the Intake Air Temperature Sensor and Coolant Temperature Sensor or if the The Engine Control Module (ECM) does not read a change in value from the Battery Temperature Sensor over time after the engine is started.

Always perform the Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting procedure before proceeding. Pre-Diagnostic Troubleshooting Procedure.

BATTERY TEMP SENSOR
1. Remove the temperature sensor and reconnect the wiring harness connector to the sensor.
2. Monitor scan tool, while heating the sensor with an external heat source (DO NOT USE OPEN FLAME).

Does the reading from the sensor increase at least -15°C (5°F). on the scan tool?

Yes

- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Intermittent Condition Test.

No

- Replace the Battery Temperature Sensor.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST - 6.7L. Powertrain Verification Test.
