Engine - Oil Leaks From Oil Pan Area

SUBJECT:
Oil Weepage From Oil Pan

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting the oil pan for weepage paths and if necessary replacing the oil pan.

MODELS:

2010-2011 (KA) Nitro

NOTE:
This Service Bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with a 4.0L engine (Sales Code EGS) built before August 11, 2010 (MDH 0811XX).

DISCUSSION:
During service, some Customers or Dealership personnel may become aware of dampness in the area of the oil pan resulting from a slow engine oil weepage condition.

DIAGNOSIS:
If the above condition is present, perform the Repair Procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Hoist Vehicle.

2. Is vehicle equipped with an oil cooler?

a. Yes >>> proceed to Step # 3

b. No >>> proceed top Step # 5





3. Inspect top of oil cooler for oil (Fig. 1).

4. Is oil present on top of cooler?

a. Yes >>> Verify oil cooler is installed properly. If oil cooler is installed properly replace oil pan (4892228AB). Following the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Group 09 Engine > Lubrication > Pan, Oil > Removal/Installation.

b. No >>> proceed to Step # 5





5. Verify that oil filter is at proper torque. Inspect pan for signs of oil weeping down pan behind oil filter (Fig. 2).

6. Is oil weeping down pan behind oil filter?

a. Yes >>> Replace oil pan (4892228AB). Following the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Group 09 Engine > Lubrication > Pan, Oil > Removal/Installation.

b. No >>> proceed to Step # 7





7. Inspect oil pan per (Fig 3) for signs of oil weeping down pan.

8. Is oil weeping down pan?

a. Yes >>> Replace oil pan (4892228AB). Following the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Group 09 Engine > Lubrication> Pan, Oil > Removal/Installation.

b. No >>> proceed to Step # 9

9. Remove skid plate that attaches to pan (2 screws).





10. Inspect pan at two attachment holes for oil weepage (Fig 4)

11. Is oil weeping down pan?

a. Yes >>> Replace oil pan (4892228AB). Following the detailed removal and installation procedures in DealerCONNECT > TechCONNECT under: Group 09 Engine > Lubrication > Pan, Oil > Removal/Installation.

b. No >>> return vehicle to inventory for un-sold units or further diagnosis required for sold units.
