Steering - Honk/Groan On Low Speed Turns

Steering Honk And/Or Groan Sound During Low Speed Parking Lot Maneuvers

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting and if necessary replacing the power steering gear.

MODELS:

2010-2011 DJ RAM 2500 4X4 Pickup

2010-2011 D2 RAM 3500 4X4 Pickup

2010 DX Cab Chassis (Mexico Only)

2011 DD RAM 3500 Cab Chassis

NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles equipped with 6.71 Cummins(R) turbo diesel engine sales code (ETJ) and built prior to November 23, 2010 MDH (1123XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may experience a honk and/or groan sound coming from the steering system during low speed parking lot maneuvers.

DIAGNOSIS:
Bring vehicle up to operating temperature. Drive the vehicle slowly and make turns to the right and left similar to those made in a parking lot. If the sound is experienced, proceed to the repair procedure.





PARTS REQUIRED:

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove and replace power steering gear. Refer to the detailed removal and installation procedures available in DealerCONNECT >TechCONNECT >: Service Info > 19-Steering > Gear, Independent Front Suspension > Removal/Installation.

2. Verify the honk and/or groan sound has been eliminated. Drive the vehicle slowly and make turns to the right and left similar to those made in a parking lot. Where there any honk and/or groan sounds exhibited?

a. Yes >>> Continue further diagnosis, this bulletin does not apply.

b. No >>> Proceed to Step # 3.

3. Return the vehicle to the customer.
