Service Procedure

A. Inspect Battery Case Top at Posts for Cracks

1. Turn the ignition switch to the "Off" position. Be certain that all electrical accessories are turned off.

2. Open the hood.

3. Open the left and right battery thermal cover lids.

4. Disconnect the negative battery cables from both of the batteries.

5. Disconnect the positive battery cables from both of the batteries.





6. Inspect each battery case top around the positive and negative posts (Figure 1):

> If no cracks and/or electrolyte leakage is found in either battery case top, continue with Step 7 of this procedure.

> If cracks and/or electrolyte leakage is found in one or both battery case tops, continue with Section B. Replace Battery/Batteries.

7. Connect both positive battery cables to the positive battery posts (Figure 2). Tighten the battery cable clamp nuts to 35 in. lbs. (4 Nm).

8. Connect both negative battery cables to the negative battery posts (Figure 2). Tighten the battery cable clamp nuts to 35 in. lbs. (4 Nm).

9. Close both battery thermal covers.

10. Connect the wiTECH scan tool to the vehicle and clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).

11. Close the hood and return the vehicle to the customer.

B. Replace Battery/Batteries





1. Remove and save the battery thermal cover (Figure 3).





2. Remove and save the battery hold-down retaining bolt and battery hold-down (Figure 4).

3. Remove and discard the battery from the battery tray.

WARNING:
Wear a suitable pair of rubber gloves (not the household type) when removing a battery by hand. Safety glasses should also be worn. If the battery is cracked and/or leaking, the battery electrolyte can burn your skin and/or eyes.

4. If both batteries are being replaced, repeat steps 1 through 3 for the second battery before continuing with Step 5 of this procedure.

5. Position the new battery into the battery tray. Ensure that the battery positive and negative terminal posts are correctly positioned.

NOTE:
The battery cable terminal clamps must reach the correct battery terminal post without stretching the cables.

6. Position the battery hold-down and install the retaining bolt (Figure 4). Tighten the battery hold-down retaining bolt to 40 in. lbs.

7. Clean both battery cable clamps (Figure 4).





8. Clean both battery posts (Figure 5).

9. Install the battery thermal cover (Figure 3).

10. Connect the positive battery cable to the positive battery post. Tighten the positive battery cable clamp nut to 35 in. lbs. (4 Nm) (Figure 2).





11. If both batteries are being replaced, repeat steps 5 through 10 for the second battery before continuing with Step 12 of this procedure.

12. Connect the negative battery cables to each batteries negative post. Tighten the negative battery cable clamp nuts to 35 in. lbs. (4 Nm) (Figure 2).

13. Close both battery thermal covers.

14. Close the hood.

15. Connect the wiTECH scan tool to the vehicle and clear all Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs).
