Driveline Vibration
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting for a correct drive shaft center support bearing bracket and replacing the bracket if the bracket is incorrect.
MODELS:
2012 DP Ram 4500/5500 Cab Chassis
NOTE:
This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or between August 17, 2011 and October 6, 2011.
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A small number of vehicles were built with an incorrect drive shaft center support bearing bracket. The bracket on these vehicles may have an incorrect height which could allow the drive shaft to operate at an angle that could cause the driveline to vibrate while the vehicle is in motion.
DIAGNOSIS:
If a customers VIN is listed in VIP or your RRT VIN list, perform the repair. For all other customers that describe the symptom/condition, perform the Repair Procedure.
PARTS REQUIRED:
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
2. Measure the height of the drive shaft center support bearing bracket from the attaching fastener to the frame rail (Fig. 1). The distance should be 52.1 mm (2 inches). Incorrect drive shaft center support bearing brackets will be 82 mm (3.25 inches).
3. Was the height of the drive shaft center support bearing bracket 52.1 mm (2 inches) from the attaching fastener location to the frame rail?
a. YES >>> This vehicle has the correct drive shaft center support bearing bracket and does not apply to this service bulletin.
b. NO >>> Proceed to the next step.
4. Mark an outline of the center bearing on the center bearing bracket for installation reference.
5. Remove the fastener that attaches the drive shaft center support bearing to the bracket.
6. Support the drive shaft so that the drive shaft does not hang by the joints.
7. Remove the bolts that secure the drive shaft center support bearing bracket to the frame and remove the bracket.
8. Install new drive shaft center support bearing bracket (p/n 52123065AB) securing it with the attaching fasteners. Tighten the bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft.lbs.).
9. Align center bearing with reference marks on center bearing bracket and tighten bolts to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.).
10. Lower the vehicle.
