Engine: Service and Repair

1982 CONCORD & SPIRIT

On these models, the engine and transmission are removed as an assembly.

1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain cooling system. Do not loosen cylinder block drain plug with system hot and under pressure because serious burns from coolant can occur.
2. Disconnect upper and lower radiator hoses at radiator.
3. Mark location of hinges on hood, then remove hood.
4. Remove air cleaner, fan and fan shroud.
5. On models equipped with automatic transmission, disconnect fluid cooler lines from radiator.
6. Remove radiator to support attaching bolts, then remove radiator.
7. Remove power steering pump drive belt, if equipped.
8. On models less A/C, disconnect wire connector from alternator.
9. On models with A/C, remove compressor and condenser attaching bolts, then position compressor and condenser out of way with refrigerant lines connected. Remove evaporator to dryer line from sill clips.
10. Disconnect heater hose from intake manifold, then remove throttle cable clip and remove cable from bracket.
11. On models with A/C, disconnect wire connector from alternator and pull wiring through tube.
12. Disconnect pressure and return hoses from power steering gear, if equipped.
13. Disconnect module control solenoid, choke heater, idle speed solenoid and temperature sending unit wire connectors.
14. Detach dipstick tube from exhaust manifold, then remove tube and dipstick from block.
15. Remove engine mount nuts at crossmember and ground cable from lefthand engine cushion bracket at engine.
16. Disconnect fuel hose from steel tube on righthand frame side rail.
17. Disconnect wiring from starter solenoid, distributor and oil pressure sending unit.
18. Loosen crossmember attaching bolts and lower crossmember slightly, then remove transmission oil cooler lines, if equipped, speedometer cable from transmission, transmission linkage, back-up light switch wire connector, transmission rear mount and crossmember.
19. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold, then suspend exhaust pipe from strut rod bushing with wire.
20. On models equipped with manual transmission, disconnect clutch linkage.
21. Mark propeller shaft and pinion flange so they can be installed in the same position, then remove propeller shaft.
22. Using a suitable engine lifting device, remove engine and transmission from vehicle.
23. Reverse procedure to install.
