Fuel Pump: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove alternator and harness as an assembly and position aside, then disconnect mounting bracket from cylinder block and intake manifold.
3. Loosen bottom bolt of intake manifold-to-right side engine cushion bracket and move bracket toward fender panel.
4. Disconnect carburetor vent hose and position aside.
5. Temporarily move coolant hoses to heater core to gain clearance, then disconnect vacuum hoses after tagging them.
6. Disconnect fuel inlet pipe at fuel pump, then disconnect fuel pump-to-carburetor pipe at pump.
7. Install engine holding fixture and remove right engine cushion through bolt and raise engine slightly.
8. Raise and support vehicle.
9. Disconnect right side engine cushion bracket from block and axle bracket, then lower vehicle.
10. Raise engine and position bracket to gain access clearance to fuel pump bolts, then remove fuel pump bolts and fuel pump.
11. Clean all gasket material from fuel pump-to-block mating surface, then install new gasket and fuel pump and torque to 15 ft. lbs.
12. Connect fuel pipes to fuel pump.
13. Connect engine cushion bracket to cylinder block and axle bracket, then lower engine onto cushion and remove holding fixture.
14. Install engine cushion through bolt and nut, then connect vacuum hoses and route heater hoses to original locations.
15. Install intake manifold-to-cushion bracket.
16. Install alternator mounting bracket and alternator, then install and adjust belts and reconnect battery ground cable.
