The updated service procedures apply to the following models:
1982-87 Cherokee/Wagoneer 1987 Wrangler/YJ 1986-87 Comanche
1986-87 Grand Wagoneer 1986-87 J-10, J-20 Truck 1982-87 Eagle

Cruise Control, Turning Signal, and Wiper Lever Assembly:

LEVER REMOVAL - WITH CRUISE CONTROL

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.

2. On tilt columns, place the steering wheel in the full up position.

3. Place the combination lever (A) in the right turn position.

4. On models with the wiper/washer switch mounted on the lever, turn the wiper/washer switch to the Off position to align lever tab (B) with slot (C) in the column switch.

CAUTION: The column switch will be damaged if the tab and slot are not aligned during removal.
5. Disconnect the cruise control switch harness from the main harness. The harness connection is accessible from under the instrument panel.

6. Attach a fish wire to the cruise control harness as follows:

^ Use mechanics wire and make it long enough to guide the harness out of the column.

^ On Eagle models, tape the fish wire to the harness connectors.

^ On all other models, loop the fish wire through the small hole in harness connector (D).
7. The lever (A) is a snap-fit in the column switch (E). To remove the lever, pull it straight out of the switch.

CAUTION: Do not bend or twist the lever during removal. It must be pulled straight out to avoid damaging the column switch.
8. Guide the switch harness out of the steering column with the fish wire.

9. The lever is serviced as an assembly only. Do not attempt to disassemble it for repair.
LEVER INSTALLATION - WITH CRUISE CONTROL

1. If a replacement lever is being installed, attach the fish wire to the cruise control harness connector(s).

2. Install an anti-rattle shim (F), P/N 8956 002 285, on the lever.

3. Guide the cruise control harness into the column with the fish wire.

4. On Eagle models, install the lever as follows:
Align and start the lever in the column switch. Then push the lever into the switch in one continuous motion until it snaps into place.

5. On all except Eagle models, install the lever as follows:

^ Hold the washer switch thumb lever (G) in the Off position to align lever tab (B) and upper lug (H).

^ Start the lever in the column switch (E). Then push the lever into the switch in one continuous motion until it snaps into place.

CAUTION: Be sure lever tab (B) and the two lugs (H) are aligned with slots (C) and (J) in the column switch. The switch can be broken if misalignment occurs during installation.

6. Remove the fish wire and connect the cruise control harness to the main harness.

7. Connect the battery negative cable.
LEVER REMOVAL - WITHOUT CRUISE CONTROL

1. Turn the wiper switch to the Off position.

2. The lever is a snap-fit in the steering column switch. Remove the lever by pulling it straight out of the column switch.

CAUTION: Do not bend or twist the lever during removal. It must be pulled straight out to avoid damaging the wiper switch.

3. The lever is serviced as an assembly only. Do not attempt to disassemble it for repair.

LEVER INSTALLATION - WITHOUT CRUISE CONTROL

1. Install an anti-rattle shim (F), P/N 8956 002 285, on the lever.

2. Hold the washer switch in the Off position with thumb lever (G). Start the lever in the column. Be sure lever tab (B) is aligned with switch slot (C).

3. Push the lever into the column switch in one continuous motion until the lever snaps into place.
