Fuel Filter: Service and Repair

The fuel pump and filter assembly are located on the passenger side of the vehicle. They are mounted on a plate to the floorpan ahead of the fuel tank and rear axle assembly. The fuel pump, filter and accumulator can be serviced separately.
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Install tool clamps Mot. 453.01 or equivalent, onto fuel pump inlet and outline lines to prevent fuel loss when lines are disconnected.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors from fuel pump.
5. Disconnect and cap fuel lines from pump or filter assembly.
6. Remove fuel pump or filter assembly attaching straps.
7. Remove fuel pump or filter assembly. The accumulator is installed in the fuel line connecting the fuel pump and filter assembly. The accumulator dampens fuel flow from the fuel pump during vehicle operation. The accumulator can be serviced separately at this point if necessary.
8. Reverse procedure to install.
