TO: ALL RENAULT DEALERS
SUBJECT: MEDALLION ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) UPDATE
The purpose of this communication is to inform all dealers of the progress of the Medallion ECU retrofit program and to advise them of their responsibilities in making it a success.

All automatic transmission equipped Medallions ordered by dealers on or after July 27, 1987 have been equipped with the latest generation ECU. This can be confirmed by the presence of a daub of paint (A) on the visible end of the clamshell that houses the ECU, as seen in Figure 1 and/or by the presence of the homolagation number HOM 7700 742 979 (B) on the ECU below the part number as seen in the exploded section of Figure 2.

Effective with the receipt of this communication, dealership service personnel must adhere to the following procedures:
NEW PARTS
Any unused (never installed on a vehicle) ECU's P/N 7700 736 396 in Parts Department stock must be returned to the PDC for credit. Do not mark the ECU cover in any way.
FIGURE 3:
IN SERVICE VEHICLES
When an ECU is removed from a vehicle that has been placed in service, indicate this by placing a daub of red paint (C) on the ECU as shown in Figure (3) before returning the part to C.R.E.G.
Note: Don't forget to send the ECU's removed from in service vehicles directly to C.R.E.G. operations per the Mailgram instructions of July 20, 1987.
DEALER STOCK VEHICLES
When an ECU is removed from a vehicle in dealer stock, do not mark the ECU. ECU's removed from vehicles in dealer stock should also be sent directly back to C.R.E.G. as explained in the Mailgram of July 20, 1987.

RETROFIT PROGRAM ECU IDENTIFICATION
When installing an ECU identify the installation by placing a daub of red paint on the clamshell that houses the ECU as shown in Figure (1).
