Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Disconnect flex hose from heat tube and remove attaching bolt.
3. Remove bracket attaching bolt located at rear of engine.
4. Remove remaining heat tube and tube bracket attaching bolts and nuts. The remaining bolts/nuts are located under the intake manifold.
5. Remove TDC sensor to clutch housing attaching bolts, then the sensor.
6. Remove steering bracket.
7. On models with A/C, carefully and slowly discharge refrigerant from system.
8. Disconnect and cap A/C lines from connector block and retainer. Remove retainer.
9. Remove crossmember attaching bolts.
10. Raise and support vehicle.
11. Remove front tire and wheel assembly.
12. Using tool T.Av. 476 or equivalent, disconnect passenger side tie rod ball stud from steering knuckle. Run the tie rod ball joint nut to the end of the ball stud before installing tool. This will protect the stud threads when loosening the stud.
13. Remove passenger side steering tie rod.
14. Loosen coolant expansion tank attaching strap. Pull tank out from strap and position aside.
15. Place engine support tool MS. 1900 or equivalent, onto fender flanges. Attach a suitable chain onto engine and support tool. Take up chain slack but do not lift engine.
16. Remove exhaust head pipe to exhaust manifold attaching bolts.
17. Label, then disconnect all electrical connectors and vacuum lines from transaxle assembly or which may prevent the transaxle from being removed from vehicle.
18. Remove exhaust head pipe to converter attaching bolts. Remove exhaust hanger nut.
19. Disconnect head pipe from converter.
20. Support transaxle assembly, then remove crossmember.
21. Disconnect clutch control cable.
22. Remove steering knuckle upper mount attaching bolt. Loosen but do not remove lower bolt.
23. Remove driveshaft roll pins.
24. Swing each rotor and steering knuckle assembly outward, then slide driveshafts off transaxle side gear stub shafts.
25. Remove plastic cover attached to bottom of transaxle.
26. Remove transaxle drain plug and drain lubricant from transaxle.
27. Disconnect reverse lockout cable from transaxle.
28. Disconnect shift rod from lever.
29. Remove crossover bracket bolts, then the shift rod from bracket.
30. Disconnect speedometer cable.
31. Disconnect ground strap from transaxle.
32. Support transaxle using a suitable jack.
33. Remove transaxle support cushion attaching nuts.
34. Remove two transaxle mount bracket to transaxle attaching bolts. Remove brackets.
35. Using support tool MS. 1900 or equivalent, raise engine.
36. Disconnect wire harness electrical connectors.
37. Remove starter motor attaching bolts, then the starter motor.
38. Lower engine enough for access to the the clutch housing attaching bolts.
39. Remove clutch housing to engine attaching bolts/nuts.
40. Pull transaxle assembly straight back until clutch shaft clears pressure plate, then lower and remove transaxle.
41. Reverse procedure to install.
